Telegraph report from Columbus outlines William Randolph Hearst’s plan to seek the Democratic nomination for president. The event on February 12 linked Hearst with Tom L. Johnson and the Jefferson Jackson Lincoln League, amid speculation that Hearst aims to influence national politics and align with Bryan.
In Dresden a rough box belonging to a burial casket ordered by Undertaker Schaumleffel for Mrs. Gordon Roberson’s remains was stolen Saturday night. A Polander living west of the undertaking establishment carried off the box and converted it into a cupboard.
A rear end collision of five stock trains in dense fog one mile west of Cloverdale at 2:20 this morning killed three men, fatally injured four, and injured others. Several stock cars burned. cause attributed to fog. Also reports King Edward postpones visit to Chatsworth.
Indianapolis February discussions resume between miners and operators over wage demands. Observers expect no agreement and possible April 16 work suspension. Operators favor a roughly 10 percent raise but say any increase must be borne by consumers. A leading miner says labor accounts for over 95 percent of coal cost and that raise proposals would raise price by about 60 cents per ton.
A dispatch from Willesstead Curacao reports that revolutionaries led by General Matos have secured a decisive victory near Goa, about sixty miles south of Caracas. The note notes German and British attempts to support rebels and links the blockade to prolonging a potential coup against Castro.
A proposed compromise among Great Britain Germany and Italy would grant 30 percent of Venezuela port customs receipts to the three allies for six months to a year. After that period all claimant nations would share receipts in proportion to their claims. The plan aims to ease Washington negotiations while preserving interests of non allied claimants. The iron bridge over the Tuscarawas between here and Newcomers town sank into turbid waters late Saturday afternoon. The single span collapsed while a second double span remains over the old channel. The 165 foot structure, built in 1886, suffered damage largely from faulty pier construction, with eye witnesses Moore and Baker noting the event.
