In a December message to Congress President Harrison announced a new United States Board on Geographic Names. The board assigns standard spellings for unsettled geographic terms and its decisions are adopted by government departments. In its first year it settled about two thousand spellings, including Clarke in Cuoshuetum County, replacing Clark or Chirk variants.
