A Wheeling & Lake Erie through freight plunges into a deep embankment near Chestnut Street, killing Engineer Doyle and Fireman Dilger. Nine cars plus the engine topple into a chasm as Conductor Berg and Brakemen Surrews and Emen escape unharmed. Rescue work begins at first light.
Flagman Burrows describes a caboose wreck after the rolling mill collision. He and Conductor Berg and Brake man Emen were at the rear as cars plunged into a hole in the track. The engine disappeared and the forward trucks bumped, saving others. the engineer and fireman died, Burrows aided and kept guard at the scene.
Tony Huston, a night watchman at the rolling mill, is described as the first man to win perhapive. The article highlights his role and the dramatic shift in labor at the plant during a period of unrest.
The official report states Wheel ing and Lake Erie through freight No. 183 struck a washout near the Chestnut street crossing in Coshocton. The engine and nine cars wrecked. Engineer Doyle and Fireman Dieger were killed. Conductor Berg Brakeman Eman and Flagman Burrows survived unharmed.
Eyewitnesses flocked to the Wheeling wreck site as a brutal accident unfolded in the rain. Floods from hilllines carved a hundred foot wide gash under the tracks, washing away embankments and suspending rails above a deep, muddy abyss. CONTINTED ON THIED PAGE.
The Coshocton county teachers institute began at the high school on Chestnut Street with 34 registered attendees. President L. C. Shaw led the session, Prof. J D Simpkins and Miss Lillie Faris spoke, and daily sessions and evening lectures are planned. Separately, the estate of the late Reason Baker sold two properties on Main and Chestnut Streets, with C B McCoy buying the Chestnut Street residence for 1910 and Edward Hunter acquiring the Main Street lot for 2250.
The heavy Thursday rain cleaned Main street and improved Walnut and Cam bridge. West Carlisle schools to start September 10 with Professor McClure in charge. Eight year old Ross Mains of Leader Hains near Tunnel Hill fell from a horse Sunday. leg badly mangled but no bones broken. Dr. Dean treated the wounds.
Rev John Proctor Davis longtime Keene Presbyterian pastor has received a hearty call from Watseka congregation and will assume pastor duties September 1. He is a well known figure in this city and county and has the good wishes of many friends.
A lively Saturday afternoon fight at Main street crossing between D. B. Shryock and W. L. Crown drew Pan Handle Officer Doney and Chief Maple into the scene. The men clashed on Mato street then were taken into custody and later pleaded guilty to fighting, each paying 31 and costs. Crown listed Uhrichsville as home and Shryock claimed Virginia township.
Henry King, a district delegate to the Grand Army national encampment in Chicago, will vote to move Memorial Day from May 24 to the last Sunday in May. He argues the day has drifted into picnics and excursions, and keeping it on the last Sunday would fit the commander's views and eliminate public athletic contests and other distractions.
Philipephart a prominent Avondale businessman has made an assignment. Lewis P D Schott is appointed assignee. Liabilities about 4000 dollars. Assets nearly cover liabilities. Gephart owned a planing mill in Avondale and dealt largely in lumber. For rent fifty acres good pasture J R Johnson Agent 24-21.
The community mourns Winfield S Miller who died at his farm near Coshocton after months of illness. Born November 7 1837 he was 52 and left a wife Sue J Harton and children Cora and Clifford. A farmer by trade he led in county agriculture and served on the Coshocton County Agricultural Society board including a period as president. Funeral at his residence was conducted by Rev Fant with burial in South Lawn cemetery.
Thieves raided the Zouk post office area Friday night stealing two horses two buggies and goods from postmaster F M Carpenter and Rightmire. Property traced to W M Eider near Warsaw with horses and buggies released to a barnyard. two suspicious men seen boarding a Cleveland Akron and Columbus train at Warsaw.
Mrs Emeline Lennon of Canal Lewisville receives an original pension of 12 dollars monthly dating from May 11 plus two dollars monthly for her child. She is widow of James Lennon who served in company H Fifty first Ohio and who had his pension increased from 21210372 dollars monthly from Jan 25 to May 10 the date of his death. Attorney M W Wimmer represented her.
William H. Robinson as administrator files a pension in probate against heirs Sarah Sutts Mary Crouch Addie Smith Ella Kline and George Albert Lindruff and Charles Hoglan to pay debts from the sale of real estate. The property is a house and lot in J. W. Cassingham's second addition Coshocton. Mrs. West died in the infirmary a few weeks ago.
Manager Hitchcock of Pacific and United States Express announces a new wagon on the streets to meet all trains on the Wheeling line. Express service for the morning north and noon south trains starts next Sunday, expanding operations seven days a week and improving shipper reach.
Coshocton sent 77 persons to the Grand Army encampment in Chicago with about 45 boarding the last local car on the fast train 21. Others departed Saturday night and Sunday. Names listed include Mr and Mrs Henry King Mr and Mrs T O Adams Mrs Slaughter W H Webb Alex McCullough B BR Shaw Reed M A McConnell D E Almack Mohawk B F Jones among others from Coshocton West Bedford Keene Plainfield and more. Two eastern specials and the Clark post of Philadelphia traveled west. trains were crowded and a drum corps entertained riders at the station.
