Mysterious Explosion Lifts Traction Engine Into Muskingum River

In Conesville a traction engine used for bridge work on the Wheeling and Lake Erie project exploded without warning. Engineer George Anson escaped serious injury as the 16 horsepower engine, weighing about 6000 pounds, was hurled over a 25 foot embankment and plunged into the Muskingum river. About 25 workers nearby were soaked but unhurt. The cause remains uncertain though a gauge or low water pressure theory is suggested. The mass of steam and the flying engine left witnesses stunned as the device sank under the river water.
