Historical Society meeting highlights Corydon talks

Harrison County Historical Society held a Friday night session at the Old State House with Miss Jennie Griffin reporting on talks by Mr. McGrain Judge Ridley and Dr. Oliver. The program covered vehicular transport farm machinery the Old Capitol changes and Indiana WWI achievements. A June 23 joint Indiana Historical and Pioneer Society meeting was announced.

Widow Mrs Davis Fights for Life After Corydon Stair Fall

Mrs Sabina J Davis widow of Dr W H Davis and mother of Percy Davis and Mrs A J Watson remains in critical condition at her East High Street home in Corydon after falling down a long steep stairway two weeks ago. At sixty nine she was heavy and survived the initial impact with no broken bones though gravely hurt and failing.

George Griffin editor of Owen County Democrat dies

George Griffin longtime owner and publisher of The Owen County Democrat died at his Spencer home Saturday night. Funeral set for Tuesday at Spencer at three o clock. Griffin was a veteran Indiana newspaper man renowned statewide and mourned across the community. His daughter married Heavenridge son of a Corydon Methodist preacher.

Harrison County Boys Attend Purdue Round-Up for Livestock and Corn Judging

Six Harrison County High School boys left for Lafayette to compete in the Purdue University Round-Up livestock and corn judging contest. Harrison county gains new State Highway designation

The State Highway Commission designates a Corydon to Palmyra route as part of the State Highway System. The corridor stretches from Floyd county line through Lanesville Breckenridge King s Cave Greeleyburg Corydon White Cloud to Crawford county line, near Wyandotte Cave, and continues north through Nevin Hursttown Corydon Junction New Salisbury to Palmyra. A proposal seeks Corydon Mauckport extension, which would leave Harrison County with fewer miles than many counties.

Young Man Dies in New Albany After Brief Illness

Alva Gresham aged sixteen years seven months and six days died Saturday at the family home in New Albany after a short pneumonia illness. Survived by parents Shelby and Mrs. Gresham three brothers Floyd Guy Weldon and four sisters Velda Elnora Vernia plus Mrs Sylvia Wolfe of Mott Two brothers preceded him in death. Burial followed at Bethlehem cemetery after services at the M B E church conducted by Rev Montgomery with Modern Woodmen of America aiding in the services. A large crowd attended.

John Pillar Civil War veteran dies at 85 in Crandall area

John Pillar of Blilza beth died at his home Sunday morning after long illness. He was eighty five years four months old and a Civil War veteran who had been blind for years and received a pension. Survived by his second wife and three children from his first marriage, Abraham Pillar of this county, Mrs Emma Barth of New Albany, and Mrs Effie Emily of Louisville. Funeral services were held at the residence and interment followed at Bethlehem near Crandall.

Death of James Haines Smith in New Albany area

James Haines Smith died of gangrene at St Edward’s Hospital in New Albany last Monday at eight. He had toes amputated two weeks earlier but could not stop the disease. The 69 year old farmer and former postmaster of east of Lanesville will be buried from the Methodist church with the Masonic lodge leading the funeral. He is survived by a widow, two daughters Mrs R J Gresham and Mrs Harry Hamilton of Partridge Kansas, three brothers Dixon Philip and McDonald Smith and three sisters Mrs Eli Kingery Mrs Florence Payton and a sister Elizabeth who married and moved northwest. He was a respected local leader.

Eighty Years Old Captain Briffett Celebrated at Family Dinner

Captain George W. Briffett, longtime Corydon resident and Civil War veteran born in England, turned eighty yesterday. A large dinner was hosted at his daughter Mrs William Mitchells home on North Market Street with Mrs Briffett and granddaughter Net tie in attendance. He has spent most of his life in the United States and is highly regarded as a model citizen.
