A farmer gave his daughter two chickens and said she should run away and be good. He would feed the increase for four years if she cared for them. She reportedly hatched 200 chicks and has 64 dollars in the bank. The father predicts she will own the farm at four years and charge him rent. American Farmer reports. Keller's offers ladies and children's fancy parasols.
The message cautions Alyson against idleness and smoking while noting overstocked business and crowded loiterers. It urges diligence, thrift, and abstaining from cigarettes, ending with a comical jab about a hollow head. The notice adds that Lanesville commencement will occur on June 14.
William Roose Jr. was sentenced to four months in jail by Judge Baker after pleading guilty in a U S court to using the mails for a fraudulent purpose. He advertised paying $15 weekly for at home copying and selling a $2 50 subscription, claiming a chain letter would yield large returns, while government officials described it as a chain letter scheme. The judge warned of crime and warned against skirting the law. Dyspepsia ad copy follows. The South Carolina governor refused resignations of Senators Tillman and McLaurin, a dispute over legal authority ensues.
Harrison townships public schools held the thirteenth commencement at Shiloh church last Saturday evening with fifteen graduates. Corydon Orchestra provided music and Elsie and Elzie Watson served as flower girls. The program featured invocations and student addresses on time knowledge kindness originality education and more. Diplomas were presented by the Co. Superintendent Roy Kitterman.
John Engleman of Scott township died Saturday at age 85 from infirmities of age. He was father to Ephraim Engleman and Porter Engleman and Harvey Engleman of Scott township, Mrs. Julia Gralill of Tarrison township, and Albert Engleman of Gibson county. Funeral held Sunday at Grabill's burying ground with large attendance. He was regarded as a good man beloved by all who knew him.
Household goods and furniture including chairs tables beds bedding and kitchen utensils will be sold at public auction Saturday June 1901 at 1 pm in the store room beside Corydon Bank. Terms under five dollars cash over five dollars 60 day bankable notes with approved security. R F Davis auctioneer.
About five hundred attended the Sunday memorial at Woods Chapel for the New Salisbury Lodge of Odd Fellows. Corydon Junction band played music, graves were decorated, and a full program included prayers recitations addresses and choir selections. School statistics for Corydon public schools through May 24 1901 were reported by Supt Jesse W Riddle with enrollment 415 attendance 301 days taught 176 and other metrics. Memorial Day was observed with a 2 pm program at the Auditorium featuring Mareh In the Lead, songs, orations, readings, and a later Cedar Hill graveside decoration. The Market Street Corner Band debuted, the Normal choral class provided music, and Rev. J. M. Bowler gave an address. Also includes a cough remedy testimonial and a lost black cape notice.
