Kaufman Given 48 Years In Workhouse Arson Case
Sentences were handed down in Meadville in the Crawford county arson case that drew wide interest in northwestern Pennsylvania. Louis Kaufman real estate dealer, convicted by a Crawford county jury, received four to eight years in the Allegheny County workhouse. He also faced a separate sentence of solitary confinement at the Western penitentiary. Other defendants included Gorell, Henry Blackie Cornell, and Thomas Schuck with sentences ranging from three to eight years and fines of 26 dollars. The judge noted the lightness of Kaufman’s sentence due to family concerns, as his wife and mother attended the court, the latter collapsing when pronounced. A dozen Erie citizens supported the wealthier defendants.
