AL Feet Scramble Ends with Eyes on Honors

Dick Donovan, a reivet who was tossed into the talent spool by Chicago when the American League expanded to tie clubs last winter, shapes up as one of the best stories of the year. He pitched a one hitter against Minnesota, Joe Altobelli homering for the lone counter in the seventh. Donovan’s ERA sits around 2.42 after 9 innings against the Tah. Arroyo and Wilhelm have lower marks but can’t qualify on innings. Despite five losses and months sidelined, his 14- record with a last place club reads like a minor miracle as the M and M boys fail to homer in Boston while Maris and Mantle go hitless in a Yankees loss. Baltimore clinches third after beating Chicago. Detroit tops Los Angeles in 10 innings, Ken Hunt’s homer ties the score before a two-run error. The Cleveland-Kansas City clash is wiped out in the second inning.
