A $100000 fire destroyed the Harris Shoe Store on Main near Third in Jamestown. Smoke and water damaged other stores and two banks. Fire Chief and officers coordinated a mass response as flames spread through three stories after a gas furnace ignited. The Bank of Jamestown and First National Bank suffered smoke and water damage during the blaze.
Summersville West Virginia AP reports a second coal mining disaster in as many days with thirteen miners killed including two supervisors at Pec Tad Fuel Co on the Virginia West Virginia border. Four escaped after rain trapped underground, a blast at Burton mine of Oglebay Norton Co near Curtin Mountain caused many injuries. Rescue efforts brought out several workers, with officials stating gas ignition as the likely cause.
The front line of the 13 year era of nuclear testing grew busy as five blasts were set for a single day to beat a Friday deadline. Muzama, about 1,000 tons of TNT, kicked off with two balloons two towers and Blanca a 20,000 ton underground shot 800 feet under a mesa. Blanca matched the power of Hiroshima and Nagasaki and echoed the first Trinity test. An underground blast yesterday sent dust plumes over 1,000 feet from the tunnel mouth.
Four Corry area youths were freed of malicious mischief charges after restitution for property damage in Erie and Warren counties. The group—Lawrence Nielsen, Gale Winne, Bert Stockton Jr., and George Gilbert—caused $300 damage to a railroad signal light at Lovell’s Crossing and $200 to two grave markers in McCray Cemetery, among other acts along September 15. Vatican City AP reports Angelo Giuseppe Cardinal Roncalli, new patriarch of Venice and head of the Adriatic, becomes Pope John XI. Described as jovial and studious, he is 76 and begins his reign later in life. He invites priests to dine, walks Venice’s streets, condemns casino gambling, criticizes moving the Lido casino, and pledges to oppose extreme leftist socialism while pursuing peace.
Chinese Communist artillery shelled Quemoy today but signs of easing tension appeared. The Formosa Strait saw U S Navy destroyers halt movements inside the 12 mile limit claimed by Red China and nationalist spokesmen described the shelling as a nuisance while Peiping appeared to seek face-saving restraint.
In San Antonio at the city hospital Eva Munoz a 13 year old cancer patient received a small Christmas party from about two dozen friends relatives and horses. Doctors say she will never see another holiday. The girl appeared happy yet tired as guests left.

Kerry Dale Casey, 10, told Arapahoe County detectives he shot 32 year old housewife Shirley Orlofaky after she refused to drop her purse. No charges were filed as investigators said the youth showed little remorse and gun recovery occurred at the Casey home.
Donald Kargle aged 37 of Collingsburg Westmoreland County accidentally shot himself while hunting on a farm near West Newton yesterday. He died about three hours later at Prick Memorial Hospital in Mt Pleasant.
United Fund donors urged participation after a morning report breakfast showed progress toward the 362,000 target. Cochairs B. G. Bennett and Louis Miller expressed confidence the drive will exceed the mark with citywide outreach. Bank, utility, government, retail, and club divisions report varied progress toward quotas with house-to-house and advance gifts contributing.

His estranged male partner urged leniency and reconciliation. Judge Sorg noted most funds repaid and imposed a three year probation. McElroy in Turkey Ankara US Defense Secretary Neil McKilroy arrived in Ankara for talks with Turkish leaders on defense matters.
President Eisenhower closes his drive for a Republican Congress with a nationwide radio television address from Baltimore Friday night after touring West Virginia, Pennsylvania and New York. He urged GOP workers to elect Nelson Rockefeller governor and Kenneth Keating to the Senate in New York, while Rockefeller and Keating welcomed his visit amid reports of tension over campaign style.
Harrisburg AP reports Democrats face a tough path in Tuesday’s election to gain control of the 1959 Pennsylvania Legislature. Even with forecasts of a sizable statewide majority, GOP strength in both houses remains substantial as 26 Senate seats and all 210 House seats are contested. Several Democratic incumbents are retiring or not seeking re-election, complicating efforts to flip control.
A 22 year old Watertore area mother, Alice Wheeler, remains in critical condition at Union City Stem Memorial Hospital after her ute left Route 97 three miles west of Union City, struck a guard post, and crashed into a bridge abutment. Her two children, Jeffrey and Kim, were also treated for injuries. Police have not yet determined the crash cause or questioned Wheeler.
Pittsburgh report quotes George J. Bloom GOP state chair claiming an undisclosed poll puts Arthur T. McGonigle at 82 percent of the statewide gubernatorial vote. Bloom also said Hugh Scott would receive between 83 and 54 percent, with a claimed 100,000 majority forecast for the election.
