Washington AP reports growing concern over a recession as September industrial output fell to a 1960 low. The Federal Reserve noted a drop in the index to 107 percent of the 1957 average while August showed an undershoot of earlier estimates.
Bonnie Prohaska, 30, attacked her four children with a hammer leaving each with severe skull fractures. John Prohaska, 31, returned home to find the scene and police say his wife is in a psychiatric ward for observation. The four youngsters remain in critical condition.

On his 20th birthday Hayer Vukovieh was charged with first degree murder in the death of his mother Selma Vukovich, a 37 year old described as quiet. Police say he admitted striking her with a hatchet as she slept and dragging her to her bed before she died, saying he hoped to communicate with the dead as part of an experiment.
Cambria County reports its third and fourth polio cases of the year at Johnstown Memorial Hospital. Michael Perrone Jr of Barnesboro and Valerie Sitten of Johnstown were in fair condition yesterday after receiving three doses of Salk vaccine. The Sitten child was hospitalized September 28 and the Perrone child October 3.
George Jacob Keller, a 62 year old animal trainer, collapsed during a tiger pit act at Shrine Givens last night. The crowd of about 9 000 witnessed the event as the show continued after doctors attempted to revive him. The cause of death was not determined by late tonight.
A 14 year old Allentown boy received the first annual PNPA outstanding newspaper carrier award during the state association's convention in Allentown. William C. Armstrong, a carrier for the Allentown Evening Chronicle, was presented a trophy and a $100 salvage bond among nine other honored carriers from 7,1100 boys statewide. Andrew Bitner of the Lock Haven Express was also cited.
Two teens were involved in a collision on West Pivasy street near First Avenue. Edward G Weaver, 18, suffered minor injuries. his car sustained $180 damage while the other vehicle, driven by Gharley Joint, 17, showed $2000 in damage with no injuries. Police reported the drivers attempted to avoid a crash but could not stop in time.
Havana based El Mundo says two Americans Allan D. Thompson and Paul Hughes were captured with a landing force in Oriente province last week. The paper ties them to the 27 man invasion and notes an army officer announced their arrest in a Santis speech.
State Police, local volunteers and Civil Defense units scoured Elgin and nearby areas for 14 year old Larry Burrows after he vanished Thursday afternoon. Authorities said he was seen with his father’s high powered rifle and had left home overnight, prompting a large manhunt that extended into darkness and included Cory Blym Beaverdamn Union City Columbus teams and Salvation Army.
The Gibbs Barber Shop at 196 East Main Street is sold to John R. Toy of Oil City. Toy, Erie barber school graduate, plans daily hours 8 to 7 30 p.m. except Fridays until 8 p.m. He will reside on West Smith Street with his wife and children.
Winston Todd, 25, dies in a crash with his brother Jerome Todd, 20, after both cars collide on a curve near their home. Jerome is in serious condition at a hospital. Conway County Coroner Little John Blanton cites the brothers’ pursuit after Winston failed to return from a store.
