Capt. Richard Best, officer in charge of the Salvation Army, received a ten dollar contribution check presented by Olin Bracken s, the campaign committee chairman, during this year’s drive.

Erie area campaign leaders opened the 1961 United Fund drive with Stewart W Phillips of Erie delivering the kickoff speech opposing higher taxes and urging voluntary giving. Olin Bracken Jr announced advance gifts totaling 2225 and presented quarterly agency payments totaling 11,354 to Corry Memorial Hospital YMCA Salvation Army. Division leaders and workers received assignments for road campaigns ahead of a October 31 victory report.

Pennsylvania man slays daughter after late night call

Francis Campuzano, 41, is charged with homicide after fatally shooting his daughter Patricia Ann, 15, in her bedroom following a telephone call at about 12:25 am. Detectives say he claimed the death was an accident while holding a .45 and a .32, striking her as she ran. The girl died hours later in a hospital.

Ripley couple sue state over polluted spring water

HIPLEY a Ripley couple Anthony M and Victoria Kosciuszko seek 35300 in damages claiming New York Thruway construction lowered an embankment and polluted their spring water supply. They allege costs for hauling water daily and seek damages for water, embankment, and ditch work. Judge Bernard Ryan adjourned the case to October 27. Also, Yankee pitcher Bill Stafford to be inducted into the Army this Sunday at Knox Kentucky, with six months active duty.

An 11 year old Corry girl Jean Apthorp was struck by a westbound auto while walking on West Main Street extension.
