In Honolulu a group of ninth graders were asked to write the Pledge of Allegiance and none did so correctly. A teacher reported widespread spelling errors and misunderstanding of the pledge among students from diverse backgrounds. Some wrote “under guard” for “under God” and “for richest stand” for “for which it stands.”
In Racine a Wadewitz School special education class titled The Light and Bright Writers Club produced Gripping Tales Living with Seizures a 42 page book by nine handicapped children ages 9 to 13. The volume includes personal essays history statistics legal rights and famous epileptics noting the authors Debbie Elsa Jim John Keith Pat Rose Tim and Tracy with teachers and parents credited.
A Forest County jury spent about six hours deliberating before finding Robert Sternthal not guilty of third degree murder and voluntary manslaughter in the April shooting death of Carl McKee in Hickory Township. Defense attorney Joseph Massa Jr. argued self defense, saying Sternthal acted to protect his life after a reported altercation at Forest Manor. The trial lasted three days, and the jury returned the verdict around 9 pm.
