Boy Hero Scalp Reattached After Bear Attack

A one year old boy, Chad Taskinen, is in satisfactory condition at Kitimat General Hospital after surgeons stitched his scalp back onto his head following a bear attack. The 300 pound black bear injured him near his home on Thursday in Kitimat, British Columbia. Klaus Kuschke fatally shot the bear from 60 yards, and searchers found the scalp two hours later, 30 yards from the attack site.

Rape and multiple crashes draw state police to Corry area

State police from the Corry substation investigated a rape case dated in October with the incident likely between 4 and 5 a.m., involving a 15-year-old girl southeast of Union City and a still unidentified 25-year-old suspect. In separate incidents, Robert M. Alford and Roger D. McElroy were in a Route 6 crash west of Corry with Alford charged with drunk driving, another one-car crash on Scott's Crossing injured the driver Bruce Jaquith, and a Route 6 crash near Corry injured Mark C. Baccus with severe damage but no serious injuries.

Dime Phone Charge Plea Tested By Pennsylvania PUC

HARRISBURG AP The Bell of Pennsylvania seeks a 137 million rate rise that would end free directory assistance and raise pay phone and monthly service charges. Bell argues higher earnings are needed to improve service and attract investors, while consumer groups call the hike excessive amid flagging profits for residents. If approved, 411 directory assistance would cost 20 cents after three free calls. pay phone calls would rise from 10 to 20 cents. residential bills could rise 41 cents to 1.27 monthly, commercial up to 2.49. The issue has spanned 11 months with 53 hearings, and a final decision will follow.

Mandel Gets 4 Years From Maryland Governor Conviction

Gov. Marvin Mandel was sentenced to four years in prison for political corruption. The first sitting governor convicted of a federal crime since 1924, Mandel showed calm sadness outside the federal courthouse and said he was insolvent yet not without family support. Acting Gov. Minimum Pay Hike Near Washington A1 118

More than three million American workers would get a 35 cent increase in the federal minimum wage on January 1, raising the floor from $2.30 to $2.65 per hour. Senate and House plans differ on future raises, with the Senate proposing 25 cent yearly jumps to $3.40 by 1981 and the House proposing 20 cent yearly raises to $3.05 by 1980. The measure affects about 3.1 million workers and passed the Senate 63 to 24 after rejecting youth exemptions.

Death in high speed chase leaves man dead near Cambridge Springs

In Meadville area a high speed chase ending near Route 19 south of Cambridge Springs left Howard Lee Feltenberger dead at 51 after his car overturned and struck trees while following John Hanas 19 in a pursuit that began with an alleged brush on a pedestrian. Feltenberger’s son Gary witnessed the crash as the investigation continues and no charges have been filed against Hanas.
