County Audit Finds Sloppy Records in Erie Row Offices
An audit by Root, Spitanas and Smiley for year ending December 31, 1975 found sloppy bookkeeping, misplaced cash receipts, understated revenues and delayed investments across Erie County row offices. The report criticized the Sheriff, Prothonotary, Clerk of Courts and Treasurer on mileage reimbursements, unused dormant accounts, late remittances and inadequate records, while noting honest mistakes and ongoing corrections. County Controller A J Gehrlein defended the findings, saying corrective steps are underway and that the study was requested by the county at its own expense.
