Changes in mining laws after disaster approved

The Senate unanimously approved five changes in state mining laws, with two more sent to the Appropriations Committee for approval. Bills require new mine inspectors to be briefed by a predecessor or familiar official, ensure miners know entrances and exits, establish a hazard zone near streams, set safety standards, and create a court empowered to compel owners to recover entombed bodies. The measures stem from the Port Griffith disaster that killed 12 miners. The report notes actor Edmund Gwenn left an estate of about 4000 dollars, with shares to his former wife Minnie Terry and sister El Kellaway in England.
