Tax squeeze grows as government spending climbs nationwide
New York AP reports that while federal gas tax rises slow, state and local expenses keep rising. Higher rents and school, property, and sales taxes follow population growth, more public employees, and higher pay scales. Taxpayer burden shifts to states and locals amid rising living costs.
Rising government spending and payrolls exceed WWII lows
The text notes payroll totals around six million, roughly double postwar figures, with per person pay rising as state and local authorities fund new facilities. Spending is at a record level and likely to rise again this fiscal period, outstripping tax income and requiring more borrowing. Two solutions, cut spending or raise taxes, are politically unpopular but inevitable.
