Jamestown slaying. third man held in murder case
Two Jamestown youths Otis McGaughy 17 and Arthur Mitchell 24 were ordered held without bail on first degree murder charges after the fatal knife slaying of Harold H. Medley 45 at Sebby’s Restaurant. Clarence Wik 40, uncle of McGaughy, was also detained on the same charge following a coordinated alert by New York and Pennsylvania authorities. Medley was stabbed near the bar as witnesses say McGaughy returned with his uncle after an earlier quarrel, and a bystander received a shoulder wound while trying to intervene. Erie County Officials Limit Long Distance Calls
County commissioners decided after discussions to bar direct long distance calls by employees. Controller Byron Clapper cited difficulty in identifying who placed calls and asked General Telephone Co. to aid in extending caller identification. Aides will route long distance calls through switchboard when possible. otherwise operators will verify time and charges. The move aims to improve accounting and accountability within each office. In other news, India plans to increase naval aid from Britain, including potential submarine facility access.
