Technical problems forced the postponement of Mariner 4 launch toward Mars. No new date set. a 1 hour 12 minute launch window expired at 12 41 pm EST. If successful, the craft would approach Mars next July 24 within 8600 miles to transmit first close up data.
In Saigon Premier Tran Thien Khiem declares martial law amid a tense standoff with anti government forces. Buddhist leaders tighten security as barbed wire fences ring the National Palace and police disperse a news conference by a former political organizer. Huong cites Communist Viet Cong involvement but vows to crush protests with military backing. Casualties reported among security forces with at least 30 to 40 rioters believed injured. Jamestown report says 65 year old Frewsburg resident Jack B. Clark was struck while crossing near the Post Office. He survived arm and ankle injuries after hospital care. His seeing eye dog Kenya fled the scene and was found dead near the New York Central Railroad tracks, apparently struck by a train.
Two Jamestown residents Clarence Williams 40 and Otis McGaughy 16 will face first degree murder charges in the stabbing death of Harold Medley 35 in a bar. Medley died from a severed artery after a late night fight. Williams was arrested at the scene, McGaughy detained after a manhunt spanning Buffalo and Erie.
Governor Scranton lifts the statewide smoking ban affecting 47 counties including Western Pennsylvania. The ban had been in place since Monday in several counties, with officials reporting widespread noncompliance and renewed debate over public health policy.
Detroit pilot Mortis DeWey Jr., 39, escaped serious injury when his single engine plane skimmed a plant and hit power lines, crashing on the lawn of Sylvania Plastics in Warren. He sustained an eyebrow laceration, was admitted for observation, and alerted police before being taken to Warren General Hospital. He was alone and en route from Williamsport to Erie when fuel ran low.
Washington AP report: Secretary of State Rusk and Ambassador Taylor begin a tight appraisal of U S strategy in Viet Nam. Aims to guide a possible Johnson expansion beyond South Viet Nam with air strikes on North Viet Nam supply lines via Laos. Taylor favors timely new decisions.
An 80 year old Albion man died after either tripping or fainting and falling into a running circular saw while his son in law Paul Novik and another man Joseph Cromik aided in cutting firewood on a tractor powered saw. He died on an Erie hospital operating table from a cut shoulder and near amputation of the arm. Two grandchildren witnessed the event but did not see the moment of the accident.
A Norwegian tanker was cut in two by an Israeli luxury liner near the New Jersey coast on Thanksgiving Day. Dense fog blocked visibility as the collision sank the tanker stern and left nineteen crew members dead or missing. An extensive air sea rescue brought 24 survivors, many in nightclothes or formal wear, from lifeboats and wreckage as dawn broke. The liner's passengers watched from decks as authorities continued searches through the day with six men still missing as Page Five continued.
Philadelphia police say a motorist shot Jain Whitney after he yelled at him. Whitney, 28, was hit three times and hospitalized in serious condition. A nearby eight year old boy and Ronald Thomas were also struck by stray shots. Thomas was treated and detained. Police seek the shooter.
General Telephone Co of Pennsylvania subscribers gain from a $100 billion long distance rate cut ordered by the FCC. A three minute station to station call to Los Angeles costs under 1.50 from 6 to 9 p.m. weekdays and all day Saturday, and 1 on Sundays and after 3 p.m. weekdays. The cut, anticipated to exceed 6 million dollars annually for Pennsylvania, is the largest rate reduction yet announced by the FCC, with Bell System companies applying the changes.
A $1,000 property bond for John French of 300 Delaware Street was withdrawn after he was placed in Erie County jail on a surety of the peace charge. French, aged 20, and two juveniles were arrested for burglaries at Johnson Brothers, Ropers Structural Steel, the Carnation Milk Co. plant, and an attempted entry at Ham Mond's Elevator. The juveniles pled guilty before Alderman M S Cobbett. French pled not guilty. All were released on bond. the juveniles for a nearby day. Chief Marley Drake led a jail term for the trio on the peace charge as threats allegedly involved, with French accused of threatening the youths to deter their testimony. The youths gave sworn statements about the threat after the Johnson Brothers burglary. The case involved multiple incidents and parties in Erie County.
Government troops push across the Congo River toward rebel forces in Stanleyville as snipers remain active. The U S embassy says Stanleyville is under control but resistance persists and many foreigners have been evacuated or are missing. Belgian paratroopers have rescued about 1,600 hostages in Stanleyville and Paulis, with airlifted evacuees continuing.
In Los Angeles a 89 year old Pacific Palisades woman was beaten with a wrench while bystanders stood 15 feet away. Corie Griffin suffered bruises and a head wound requiring six stitches before escaping. She said she left Shrine Auditorium and found her car later, while witnesses thought it was a private matter.
Michael Augustus Groner, 72, of Venus, missing since about 3 p m Monday, was found dead of exposure yesterday afternoon by Fryburg firefighters and Tionesta State Police. He was last seen around 2 40 p m Monday by hunters Allen Eisenfan and Lary Wilson near Saidy Creek, about a mile south of Marble, as a search led by Norman Heasley, township police chief, continued from 4 p m Monday.
Erie County Hospital advisory board explains suspension of chief cook Robert DeVecchio after substantiated pilfering charges and reports of food shortages harming patients. The board awaits a county commissioners hearing while staff threaten to quit until the issue is resolved. Eight witnesses were to testify at the pending hearing.
William Gusik, 29, of bycippus was electrocuted when he touched a 12 000 volt power line while battling a brush fire near a Westmoreland County town. State police said he apparently reached to ward off the flame as wind pushed it toward him.
The Corey Memorial Hospital board announced a panel of 60 local and area persons who will serve as incorporators to guide hospital operations. This shifts power from attendees at annual meetings to a defined group, with later formal incorporation planned for September and possible early sessions to orient the new body. The list includes J.
