Stud Tires Dig Into Taxpayers For 1 Billion

LANCASTER PA AP Pennsylvanians face about a billion dollars over 25 years to fix highways damaged by steel studded snow tires. A PennDOT study shows stud damage cuts concrete surface life from 26 to five years and requires resurfacing three to five times more often, costing about 50 000 dollars per mile. Six bills to ban studs are in committees with a January caveat from Rep Victor Westerberg who expects one bill to move.

308 Year Old Church in Newton to Close Its Doors

The First Church in Newton, a 308 year old parish, will hold its last service Sunday after failed merger attempts. It voted to sell its building to the Greek Evangelical Church and use funds for social and religious programs. Moderator Julian D Anthony commented on ending with dignity. Separately, about 34,000 workers will gain three cents an hour starting December 1 due to a cost of living escalator clause in the United Steelworkers contract with five aluminum firms.
