Washington AP reports the end of the draft has reduced the pool of military physicians, leaving each service short of doctors. Navy Surgeon General Vice Adm Willard P Arentzen cites a total shortage of 1,076 across the forces, with Army 682 short, Air Force 222, and Navy 172. An Air Force spokesman warns shortages may persist into 1980 81 as the all volunteer force evolves.

SEATTLE AP The King County Superior Court recessed a trial for attempted murder and ordered jurors locked in the jury room for a few minutes until the courtroom cleared. Nearly an hour and a half later Judge William Goodloe unlocked the room and found jurors still inside. He apologized, saying they had been forgotten.
The James Roden family from 222 West Smith Street suffers again after a second crash on Route B near Seneca High School. James was a passenger in a collision with a dump truck driven by his nephew Robert, 33, of 328 Mead Avenue, leaving Robert seriously injured and James shaken. Loretta Roden, Robert’s wife, is in fair condition after a weekend crash, while James’ daughter Kristen, 13, remains seriously injured and Pearl Labounty, the grandmother from Florida, was killed in a prior crash near the Rustic Inn. Police attribute possible icy road conditions as a factor.
The Anti-Defamation League notes a 20 percent rise in three major Ku Klux Klan factions over two years, totaling about 8,000 members, aided by public relations efforts and leader David Duke. The ADL cites media manipulation and race issues as growth factors while noting historical strength peaked around 40,000 in the mid-1960s.
