Smokers nationwide were urged to quit for one day and possibly longer in the Great American Smoke Out sponsored by the American Cancer Society. The effort aims to reach 10 million quitters, with pledges, rallies, and school programs in many cities and celebrity participation.

A 15 year old Corry girl, Corinie Pudder, is listed in satisfactory condition at Corry Memorial Hospital after a beating at the high school. A 15 year old male student was arrested and charged with aggravated assault following a report by the girl's mother, Juanita Pudder. The assault occurred during school hours in Room 34, with conflicting motives reported by police.
The Shah of Iran, amid protests during a 32 hour state visit, urged OPEC to refrain from price hikes for at least a year. He credited President Carter with shifting his stance from neutrality to opposing higher prices and urged conservation and new energy sources to avert future increases. OPEC members meet in Caracas in December to discuss potential rises.
Public order requires a mortician to begin disinterments within days. The move involves 163 burials at Heavenly Feast Memorial East Hanover and a nearby site covered last year. Investigation by the state Mortuary Science board led to the decision, with counsel for the families and authorities present.
Two drivers escaped charges after accidents in the city yesterday. Charles Henry, 69, of 21 Chestnut Street was cited for an accident involving damage to unattended vehicles after allegedly striking Judy Eck’s parked car on South Center Street and leaving the scene. Henry’s car sustained moderate damage. Janice Buell, 34, of 607 South Center Street was cited for failing to observe duties at a stop sign after pulling into the path of Kathryn Clayton’s car at Concord and East Church Streets, causing moderate damage to both vehicles.
Two young men, Dewey L. Pratt and Charles R. Stump, pleaded guilty to criminal possession of a controlled substance suspected marijuana in the seventh degree. Each was fined $25 after arraignment before Clymer Town Justice Wilton Deuink. The arrests followed a routine inspection of Pratt’s car here on Wednesday, November 9, by Trooper Richard E. Steinbach of the state police.
