New Deal Victories Show Pressure Eases at Supreme Court

The New Deal scored three technical wins in the Supreme Court, offering a breathing spell amid a string of reform battles. The court refused Carter’s bid to intervene against the Guffey coal control act, declined to speed review of processing taxes under AAA amendments, and allowed the government leeway in arguing the Barkhead cotton control case against Texas and Pacific Railroad. Supporters had urged stays on AAA taxes as Louisiana millers sought relief pending their own appeal.

Hope Abandoned for Two Missing Fliers

United Prose reports from Singapore that RAF planes have scanned the Bay of Bengal for Sir Charles Wingaford-Smith and J T Pethybridge, co-pilot of the Lady Southern Cross, since Friday with no trace found. The Rangoon pilot calls the search hopeless as authorities press on along the coast.

Senate group to study probe of lobbying over McNair case

Harrisburg Nov. 12 The Batchelor senate committee meets in executive session with counsel to plan continuations of hearings into alleged lobbying by Democratic and state admin emissaries for GOP support of the bill to remove Mayor William McNair of Pittsburgh. The group may call Commonwealth Secretary Lawrence and Revenue Secretary Kalodner, who were accused by Republicans during the trial of Senator Clark of offering patronage for votes. Clark was convicted of extortion and malfeasance. the committee’s Pittsburgh hearing was held last month.

Believe Girl Slain by Woman in Missing Bride Case

Two arrests expected soon in the Corina Loring murder case as police lean on a theory involving a woman and a man. Corina died by strangulation before a planned Thursday wedding to Richard Tear, with her body found on Lovers Lane after a delay in transport. Miss Marion Cogswell of Erie spent the weekend in the city.

Columbus to begin filling lake with new dam gates closing

Columbus prepares for a historic flood as gates at the new dam will close Thursday at 0 o clock and the basin will fill to form a large lake. WPA foreman says no construction work while debris catches are installed to protect the dam. Local crowds from Columbus Corry and nearby areas expected to witness the start.

Eighteen Corry Republican Women met at Mrs. W L Peake's home for a regular session. Reports on a recent donor and card party were shared. Slayerr of N J Trooper Found Dead

Al bert E Morton known as Whitey Lewis, linked to the Warren G Yenser slaying, was found dead in Philadelphia home in what police call an apparent suicide. A key linked to Dounty Johnson, arrested in Newark, was found on Morton. Officials connected Morton to Edward Metelsti, a North Carolina prison fugitive, during a chase in a stolen car last week.

A Cleveland labor leader, shot in the left face, fights for life at Sharity Hospital after two gunmen fired buckshot at his car on Huron Road. International Union of Operating Engineers rep Krank F Converse was wounded as his car slowed for a boulevard stop. a 19-year-old bystander Donald Kincaid suffered a flesh wound.

Pleads With Doctor to Take Her Life

Buffalo Times reports Anne Becker, 34, traffic accident victim, appealed to the Medical Association of Erie County to appoint a doctor to end her life, saying she endures agony and is a burden with no money for bills. She was injured in October 1983 when struck by an unlit car, won a $6,000 judgment against an insurer that went into liquidation, and doctors say only costly treatment could help. The association had taken no action.

Beautiful Blond Held for Slaying Man in Mitchell Place

A 21st floor apartment in Mitchell Place hosted a murder when a beautiful blonde college graduate killed Dr. Prit Gebharidt, a 42 year old German manufacturer, in his luxury residence after four muffled gunshots. Neighbors heard the shots, servants used a pass key to enter, and the police found Gebharidt dead, four bullet wounds. The slayer was not at the scene. a honey-haired woman was later found on the stairs nearby. The story continues on page seven.

Couple Dead From Carfumes At Arnold Garage

The life less bodies of Ralph O. Bailey, 42, foreman at the Aluminum Company of America local sheet mill, and Mrs. Helen Boyd, 21, of Arnold, were found in a private Arnold garage from apparent carbon monoxide poisoning. They were last seen alive at 12:30 PM after leaving an Armistice Day party at a local club.

Plea to Escape Death Filed With Tribunal

Baptists Meet in Corry Rally of Protestants Planned

A rally of Baptists opposing changes in the Baptist Convention will convene at One First Baptist Church in Corry on Friday afternoon and evening.
