The rocket reached about 800 miles up sending data on electronic density in space for the International Geophysical Year. A blizzard caused three Air Force jets to crash near Malmstrom AFB Montana two pilots died and others escaped. Witnesses on a ranch saw the fiery crashes while additional planes attempted to land amid heavy snow. A third trainer aircraft landed safely with two crew members unharmed. Names of the dead were released as EB Copher 25 of Brad Camp Arkansas and Lt Ronald D Hemby 28 of Texas.
Porter pleads guilty to larceny of a revolver before Alderman Mel Cobbett. The 357 Magnum pistol was reportedly stolen from William Daniels at 45 Worth Street after Porter and another man approached the woman owner at the scene. Porter, on parole from an upstate prison, faces sentence considerations and seeks a judge for the next hearing.
Lawrence M Jewell of Avenue, Warren, pleaded guilty moments before trial in a nonfelony case of diving while under suspension. He had previously entered four pleas of not guilty. An 18 year old West Columbus avenue youth, M. David Roth, son of Mr and Mrs Livia Roth, is reported to be in fair condition at Carry Memorial Hospital after spinal meningitis. He had been in good health until last Thursday evening, grew worse Saturday, and was diagnosed by a local physician before admission to hospital. He is a ninth grade student at Corry Area High School.
An explosion and fire destroyed a one story frame home in Amenia. A mother and six children aged from six months to six years died. Father Charles Harris Sr a building contractor was severely burned and sent to Glens Falls Hospital. Sheriff officials suspect kerosene or gasoline was used near a wood stove.
The Corry Area Joint Committee will meet next month to organize for the coming year. Lyte Chase and Dr John Moher, elected November 1 as school directors, will replace retiring directors Hubert Vaughn and A L Long. Albert Sandburg, with 25 years at Columbus schools, will also depart the Joint Committee. New officers to be elected November 7 for the Corry board and November 11 for the Joint Committee.
Corry police say four live ashes from a hitchhiker’s cigarette caused a fire in the back seat of a car parked at Richard Pervin’s home. Pervin, 18, reported the incident after returning from Erie with two passengers. the Columbus fire department battled the blaze while investigators linked the cause to hot ash blowing onto the seat.
