Unusual defense yields contract in bridge column
In a West North East South contest, a slight deviation in the play at the second table lets the declarer overcome a down one result. The first table's defense fails after a routine line, while the second declarer ruffs a diamond in trick two and alters the play to create a problem for West.

Benjamin Banneker Almanac and First Clock Pioneer
The son Benjamin, educated by his grandmother, became a noted mathematician, astronomer, and surveyor. He helped lay out Washington, D C as a surveyor for the Federal government and produced an almanac begun 17 years earlier. His work earned praise from Jefferson and European fame as one of the first two Negro Americans to gain recognition there. He carved the first hours strike clock from wood, and rare almanacs, including 1689’s An Almanack for New England, are prized by collectors.
