15 Per Cent Boost Planned In Social Security Hike
The Senate cleared a 3.6 billion measure for a 15 percent boost in Social Security benefits amid a party line vote. The plan would start benefits next April, fund tax changes later, raise the minimum payment to 70 dollars, and widen the taxable wage base to 8,000 dollars next year. Future years would see tax rate and base increases. House and Senate versions differ on welfare work rules, Aid to Dependent Children, and birth control counseling funding, needing a conference committee.
