In a brisk morning start, Weber the Republican standard bearer and Peiffer the Democratic choice led their parties to the polls as campaigning winds down for the mayoral election. The day promises an interesting contest after vigorous campaigns by both candidates.
Cairo reports Egypt may turn to the United States for famine relief as the U S supplies food under Public Law 480. Nasser signals interest while relations with Bonn and Britain are cooled and Soviet and Chinese wheat imports continue. U S aid totals and Title I potential are noted amid ongoing political shifts.
North East farmer John J. Kirsch loses a dairy barn, 12 000 bales of hay and equipment in a 40 000 dollar fire. Fire halts sale of 49 cows due to 12 month blood test rule. cows kept on farm awaiting tests. Insurance partly covers losses while Kirsch plans to rebuild and restart operations. Two Gannon College coeds aided in moving cattle to safety.
Clarion Pennsylvania reports the death of Carl P. Chapaitis 18 of New Kensington a center on Clarion State College football after a car plunged down an embankment near Route 66. He was the second student from the college killed in a week as a coed died last Thursday. A 21 year old driver George W Beattie and two other passengers escaped injury. In a separate item Wilkes Barre notes the death of Bayard Hand a prominent local citizen and founder of charitable groups.
At halfway through polling, 612 Republicans and 227 Democrats out of 839 registered voters. GOP advantage strongest in Second and Third Wards with four-to-one and five-to-one ratios. Precinct totals show GOP leads across First, Second, Third, and Fourth Wards.
In Viet Nam the 1st Air Cavalry Division fought three engagements near the Pleime camp 210 miles north of Saigon. They reported 8 enemies killed 26 captured and 26 suspects seized. North Vietnamese regulars were among the dead and captured. Captain Norman P. Huggins of Mullins South Carolina bailed out east of Haiphong and was rescued after a life raft stay. Two U.S. dive bombers later attacked a North Vietnamese sampan during the rescue. Continued on Page Two.
Federal agents arrested Jack Frank of North Carolina in Brooklyn on conspiracy charges tied to the $416,028 Brink’s burglary at Syracuse. Joel Singer of Quebec is sought, with FBI linking a 20mm antitank gun used in the crime to Quebec and Long Island shore cases. Police tie the Syracuse theft to a Feb Quebec bank attempt and outline a cross border gun shipment scheme.
City brings quick plan to council to finish East Washington off street parking lot for holiday shoppers. Johnson explains Koontz Co contract allows meters as needed with no upfront cash if added. 40 more meters would cost about $2,000 cash if sourced elsewhere. The average payment after $2 monthly revenue per meter.
Harold A. Gilbert of the Corry Water Supply Co. asked City Council to consider using creek water for the municipal golf course on Macadam Fill. The pump and pumphouse were built and tied to the sprinkler system, suggesting club house service may be the remaining supply from Corry Water.

City Council unanimously approved Mayor Zalaneck's recommendation to appoint M. William Shrout to the Corry police force.
