President Johnson asked Congress to repeal Taft-Hartley Section 14B to end right to work in 19 states and extend minimum wage coverage to about 4.5 million workers. He did not press for a $1.25 raise but urged careful study of wage, price and job effects. FBI chief J Edgar Hoover told a House Appropriations subcommittee that Soviet secret agents in the United States are building a clandestine espionage network. He warned that spying is aided by Soviet intelligence in nearly every Soviet group entering the U S, including newsmen diplomats businessmen scientists students and cultural exchange missions. He also projected increased Chinese intelligence activity if China gains UN recognition and a diplomatic mission in the United States.
State Rep. Victor Westerberg of Kane toured McKean County when a Vater’s Foods truck broke down and the hired mechanic fell ill. He donned overalls and repaired the vehicle himself.
In a Washington ledgers tale, Rep. James Quillen fights a $1,717.52 claim against Wilford Metcalf of Del Rio Tennessee, who says he cut timber on his own farm and denies forest land ownership. Metcalf appeals for a new land survey while government counsel demands payment within 30 days.
Mam-youn W. McCarty former mayor of Lake City borough was named to the Erie County Planning Commission by commissioners yesterday. He is a long time Lake City business owner and former borough council president joining a nine member panel to replace Joseph S Crawford who was fired two weeks ago. McCarty is also president of the Lake City Toastmasters Club and his appointment was unanimous.
At mid day 402 votes cast across six polling places with Republicans at 227 and Democrats 75. Ward by ward counts show GOP gains in First Ward districts one and two, Second Ward, Third Ward, and Fourth Ward with varying Democratic tallies.
In Santo Domingo the Dominican junta rejected a U S peace proposal, threatening an all-out drive against rebels as tanks and artillery menacing rebel holdouts. The clash followed an abortive peace effort by Washington and OAS envoys.
Bolivian military rulers crack down on worker protests over exile of labor leader Juan Lechin. A nationwide general strike blacks out La Paz while miners seize mines and clashes with police leave at least one dead and many wounded. Union posts declared vacant with elections set within 40 days.
A nine year old, Gary Casler of 57 Snyder Circle, narrowly escaped eye damage when he jumped into a hay mow at a farm and landed on a hidden pitchfork. He was treated at Corry Memorial Hospital and released, with doctors to reexamine the eyes the next day.
City officials plan to exit the land fill garbage business after years of operation. A single bid from C W Parkhurst offered to buy the city's bulldozer for 2300, while James Hasslett's bid bond was found invalid. Council eyes a special meeting to work out remaining issues and expand downtown traffic relief with Civil Defense police on Friday nights.
Bern Switzerland Dr Horatio Mbarda 81 president of KLM Royal Dutch Airlines was killed yesterday when a two engine private plane crashed high in the Alps near the Fluela Pass in southeastern Switzerland His wife Charlotte 44 and two Swiss pilots also perished in the accident.
