A 900,00 value blaze damaged a troovy base barn reducing stock and causing substantial loss. Fire crews responded quickly and worked to contain the flames. The origin of the fire remains under investigation by local authorities.
President Johnson asks Congress to cut excise taxes by about 4 billion dollars over time, with initial 1.75 billion cuts on July 1 and next January, plus a further 346.4 million over several years to 1970. He says the cuts won’t threaten defense spending and will promote economic growth, urging business to pass savings to prices and prosperity.
U S officials press the Dominican junta to resign as talks with rebels continue in northern Santo Domingo. U S troops remain distant as heavy fighting rages, with three paratroopers wounded and the 82nd Airborne involved in exchanges across the Ozama River. A U S White House mission presses Brig Gen Antonio Imbert Barreras to step aside, while U Thant envoy Jose Antonio Mayobre reports to the U N Security Council.
Eight cars in three mishaps over the weekend left seven cars involved in two crashes and an eighth car having its own private accident. Three people were injured and two drivers cited. The incidents began at the Dairy Queen on East Columbus Avenue when William Romance, 42, slowed for a left turning car, then was hit by a following eastbound vehicle driven by Janet Chaffee. Romance car damage $300, Chaffee car $250. The injured were Jean Ward, 15, Robert Kireh, 18, and David Stutzman, 17. A second crash occurred at the Italian-American Club on West Main Street involving four cars after a driver became rattled. The account continues in the next page.
In West Berlin, Wladislaw Tykocinski, a high ranking Polish diplomat and former head of Poland's military mission there, defected seeking political asylum in the United States. His wife and 17 month old child remained in East Berlin as US officials coordinated his transfer and review of asylum requests.
Robert L. Gephart aged 53 of Carmichaels was fatally shot Saturday during a family quarrel. State police report Kenneth Kephart seventeen, fired through an open kitchen door using a neighbor’s gun. The youth is held in Greene County jail.
Corry firemen battled three brush or trash fires within two hours on Saturday. Engine 3 and Emergency Truck 5 with 12 men fought a grass blaze three miles west of Corry near the Pennsylvania Railroad, returning by 1 20 p.m. At 2 22 p.m. the same team tackled another grass fire on Lindsay Hollow road, laying 1 200 feet of hose and fighting for over two hours. A dump fire at Avenue A drew Engine 2 with seven men, put out by 3 13 p.m. Columbus volunteers stood by during the latest blazes.
Joseph W. Tinko, 47, of R D 2 Corry, was sentenced by Judge Burton Laub to eight months on two counts of larceny in Erie County Court. A jury found him guilty of a third larceny count involving a wallet theft from Waterford and another theft at an Erie tavern. Walters, 38, Sunbury, died from injuries after a car ran off Route 147 Saturday.
In South Bend Indiana 360 striking teachers return to class after a six day boycott. The pact backed by George Bull and Louis Bruggner allows wage talks at a board meeting set for Wednesday. The dispute began over a proposed minimum wage of 52050 for new teachers with fringe benefits.
A Detroit civil rights worker killing case drew thousands to Ku Klux Klan events in North Carolina. Cok He Wilkins and two other men faced a hung murder trial, while rallies in Dunn and Sanford featured Klan leaders promoting anti civil rights rhetoric and fundraising, including a call for a Klan airplane.
A gas explosion at the Cambrian colliery near Cardiff in the Rhondda Valley killed one miner and trapped 25 others. Rescue teams recovered two miners and a body. condition of the survivors unclear. The mine employs 838 workers, with 80 underground at the time of the blast at a depth of 300 feet.
South Viet Nam AP reports at Bien Hoa Air Base a chain explosion of four 500 pound bombs left 27 Americans dead or missing and 10 percent wounded. A fifth bomb exploded in wreckage. officials evacuate personnel while ordnance specialists assess. Maj. Gen. Moore said bombs could not be disarmed and delays could trigger further blasts in coming days.
Washington coverage of a weekend teach-in on U S Vietnam policy drew students and professors who praised the idea but worried no side won. At American University Margret Thomas and Janet Gladfelter urged ongoing questioning of policy while others noted the event came too late to shape Johnsons bombing decision. The marathon, 18 hours long, was broadcast to over 1000 campuses as groups debated U S stance in South Vietnam.
The Corry area was spared by a severe storm, while nearby Erie suffered heavy thundershowers and over an inch and a half of rain. Flooding blocked streets and sewers, motorists were trapped, and a barn roof collapsed injuring a Union City woman. Lightning damaged a printing plant in Erie, with most damage blamed on smoke and water. Firefighters fought the blaze for hours while minor house fires reported in Erie.
