Vermont Sap Running Brings Pa Maple Ties to Vermont Brands

Harold Ott of the Erie County Extension notes Vermont labeled syrups are partly made in Pennsylvania. Lower grade Pennsylvania syrup is blended in Vermont and other states to improve palatability while top grades are mostly produced and packaged by the producers themselves. Prices for fancy syrups reach about $13 per gallon, common in Vermont and Pennsylvania. Pennsylvania produces 86,000 gallons annually, about $500,000 in business, with Somerset County leading at 26,500 gallons. Erie and Crawford counties compete for second, Erie around 12,700 gallons valued at roughly $369,000. Modern sugar houses use gas or electric cookers and temperature controlled boils, replacing wood fires. The Erie County sap season is underway amid fluctuating temperatures, with some days collecting ice rather than syrup, but outlook remains strong.
