Nixon Defends Rogers and Laos War Tactics
President Nixon defended the Laos operation and ongoing Vietnam troop withdrawals, saying U.S. forces will stay in the South while North Vietnam holds prisoners. He defended Secretary Rogers against Symington who questioned his role, asserting Rogers remains the chief foreign policy adviser and spokesman. Nixon noted Abrams reports South Vietnamese forces can handle Laos and Cambodia, with reduced North Vietnamese truck traffic and continued Vietnamization. No U.S. ground forces would enter North Vietnam, Cambodia, or Laos beyond rescue missions, and airpower would target enemy sites while withdrawals proceed.
