A swift excursion train carrying about 200 passengers collided head on with a freight train at South Darlington station. Twenty two killed, forty injured, many in critical condition. three coaches telescoped. Ambulances and medical staff rushed to the scene, with hospitals overwhelmed in the aftermath of the disaster.
Captain Frank Courtney, English aviator, resumes a plan for a long oversea flight from Lisbon with a one stop at the Azores. His convoy includes B B Hosmer, Sergeant Price, and Gilmore. A prior attempt was aborted two hours after takeoff due to mechanical trouble and head winds.
Washington reports the Treasury will apply a surplus of more than 40 million dollars to public debt reduction in 1828. The plan would reduce the national debt by about 1.8 billion and move toward narrowing the debt burden overall. In Reading Pa two railroad yard raids seized two cars filled with beer in separate operatives conducted by federal prohibition officers.
In Houston on June 28 the Democratic drafting committee endorsed a prohibition emphasis tied to the 18th Amendment. The farm relief plank won unanimous support, Moody may push for a stronger line on prohibition on the convention floor, while the platform also pledges foreign relations principles and Boulder Canyon Dam action.
Harrisburg June 28 United Press reports the State Highway Patrol will help enforce Pennsylvania’s new air regulations starting July 1. Pilots and aircraft will be licensed by Pennsylvania authorities without new examinations for those holding federal permits.
Corry will actively support a plan backed by third class Pennsylvania cities to share in the state gasoline tax used for street repair and maintenance. The move seeks to distribute gas tax receipts beyond counties, and a council committee approved sending a response pledging full cooperation to push the proposal in the Legislature.

Albany June 28 The flush of victory has made a new man of Governor Alfred E. Smith, noted for shy reticence more than the legend of the happy warrior. Friends attribute the change to the weight of imminent duties as party standard bearer and chief executive.
Rev E Hamilton Sturtevant spoke at the Kiwanis luncheon at the Hotel Corry on Brotherhood founder and aims to unite all denominations into a world brotherhood. Dr Whiteman of Pittsburgh visited Robert Donaldson at Spring Creek. Plans for an early joint meeting with Rotary include a golf match and dinner at the Corry Country Club.
Deputy Coroner W C Jones of Titusville ruled Harold Hutchinox death accidental after an inquiry into his drowning in Oil Creek flood waters. The body was taken to W J Arnold’s undertaking rooms in Titusville for burial preparations. He was the son of Eliot Hutchinson of Wisconsin, with surviving siblings. The youth had been living with Mr and Mrs Job Harris in Corry. Funeral plans were not yet finalized.
Plans for a garden party to be staged by the ladies of St Thomas church on July 26 were laid at a committee meeting last evening. An entertainment program is being prepared for the annual festivity on the church lawn, expected to eclipse previous affairs.
Pottsville Pa June 28 miners Trumbo 51 and Charles Kramer 50 are in serious condition after Trumbo opened fire with a shotgun while allegedly intoxicated. State police describe him as "crazy drunk."
Rome reports favorable weather may allow aerial rescue of 21 men lost in the Arctic encampment of Lieutenant Vig- Heri. Italian, Swedish, and Finnish planes are ready for hazardous flights to the ice, with Lindborg seeking spare parts to repair his damaged craft and attempt a landing near the Tulea’s five captives since May 35.
A large strawberry festival is planned at Thomas Ingram's ham at Concord Corners on the Corry Spartansburg road Friday evening Tue 29h to aid the Concord road improvement project. The event will feature a time entertainment program with the Spartansburg band mate quartet and barn dance plus plentiful food. Local boosters expect a big turnout from the city and nearby areas.
Manager Shamburg of the Rex Theatre presents the first amateur night at the West South Street Movie House tonight with nine acts. Shows begin at 9, followed by the feature. Prizes include 10 dollars for first, five dollars for second, plus theatre tickets for third place. In a separate item King Altonan of Spain arrived in London for a vigil in England accompanied by the Duke of Mivends.
At Houston on June 23, Senator James A. Reed of Missouri was nominated by Charles M Howell as the party’s candidate. Delegates debated platform drafts endorsing enforcement of the 15th Amendment, anti corruption measures, and farm relief while southern opposition to a dry plank lingered. Reed’s nomination drew Missouri support. Smith remained to fight for possible later triumphs as the platform committee prepared its report and next leading speeches.
City Council, in a special session, approved Ordinance No 551 setting the city engineer’s salary at 50 dollars a year with a 5 percent contract-stipend. No action on department personnel. matter tabled until Monday night when more steps, including possible appointment, are expected.
