GOP Foresees Success In Housing Vote
Republicans in Congress anticipate a favorable outcome as the House nears a vote on a 5.5 billion housing bill late next week. They defend the bill against claims it creates a loose program to subsidize rents for families above the lowest income, arguing it extends existing housing programs, spurs private development, and reaches new beneficiaries. Democrats, outnumbering Republicans, show some unease about government rent subsidies for moderate and low cost housing built by churches unions and limited-dividend firms.
