He indicated support for an amendment to pay the bonus with a $3 billion new currency issue funded by wealth levies to retire the currency gradually.
Harrisburg June 26 The 1935 General Assembly approves highway legislation tallying 2680 miles of roads added to the state system including 160 miles of borough streets and 48 miles of city streets Amend and extend the Parkinson act with a $9,000,000 appropriation and related measures aimed at road maintenance and improvement across the state.
The 1985 General Assembly added several Wayne and Concord township roads to the state highway system, per assemblyman Jona B. Van Allsburg. Wayne roads include Five Corners to Wattsburg, Spencer’s Corners to Roosevelt highway, and links to Spencer schoolhouse. Concord routes include Casey’s Corners to Golegrove schoolhouse and Cottage Hill to Oxhaw Hill, with further improvements planned.

In Pittsburgh on June 26 two young men were held by police for further investigation after a Messenger identified them as two of three bandits who robbed Joseph Nolan. The bandits stole $2,040 last week. William Porter 25 and Frank Joyce 22 denied involvement. Magister Fred C. Baur ordered continued detention.
Meridian, Migs June 26 Two red-eye unshaven brothers grimmed a mile above the earth today and flew toward a world endurance record they may beat by July 4. Freil and Al Keys fueled, ate, and pressed on from Meridian airport to surpass the Hunter brothers record of 559 hours 15 minutes, with an unofficial 647 hours 40 minutes set in St Louis.
President Roosevelt issued an executive order establishing the National Youth Administration with a $50,000,000 allocation from the works relief fund to aid 500,000 needy youths. Aubrey Williams will run the agency with Josephine Roche chairing a special committee to implement job training, education, and employment projects.
A blaze at Philco Radio Corporation No. 6 plant in Philadelphia caused an estimated 400000 dollars in damage. Firemen battled the flames for over two hours after a patrolman detected smoke. The fire started on the fourth floor and spread to lower levels, with efforts aimed at preventing spread to nearby buildings.
Reading, June 26 Democratic House leader Rep Frank W Ruth was rushed to Reading Hospital for treatment after six months of pressure guiding Governor Earle’s administration through the lower branch. Overwork cited as cause of his breakdown while serving in the legislature.
United Press reports a 20,000 pound dynamite blast at Southwestern Portland Cement Company near El Paso Texas killed 17 year old boy and left three workers with likely fatal injuries. Initial rumors tied 12 men trapped under rock but plant officials later confirmed all workers survived. Plant superintendent Stephen Sparks was briefly affected by the collapse of rock.
Washington June 26 Rail rail pension bills aim to skirt a Supreme Court ruling from the railroad retirement act. Sen. Robert Wagner and Rep. Crosser sponsor the measures. Under the proposal railroad workers who retire at 85 would get annuities from a $50,000 federal fund. Carriers subject to the interstate commerce act would pay a four percent tax while payrolls contribute to the treasury and workers contribute two percent of income. The bill mirrors a House measure by Rep. Crosser with minor changes.
Harrisburg June 25 The W81st Pennsylvania General Assembly ended Saturday night costing taxpayers $1,930,276 including $249.7 for printing and bills histories calendars and journals House costs were $740,828 Senate $901,021 and Legislative Reference Bureau $15,082 Salaries mileage postage and per diem employes were included plus tax measures. A new biennial tax package totaling about 1250,000 was levied along with a graduated income tax projected to yield about $82,000,000 over two years.
President Roosevelt urged rapid enactment of three tax proposals as part of a revenue program for social order. He warned that delaying beyond a Saturday could cost the government $1.5 million daily. Senate leaders sought to attach the plan to the nuisance tax extension, while the House would need to originate if passed separately. If delays persist, Congress could adjourn by September or October.
Archie W. Thompson Post No 264 will send a delegation to Williamsport for the three day Pennsylvania State VFW encampment. A 21 gun salute will honor dead comrades. National Commander James J. Van Zandt will speak along with Governor George J. Early and Sen. James J. Davis. A military parade and officer election will close the event.
Pittsburgh June 6 United Press says South Penn Oil Co and Tidewater Oil Co Ltd cut Pennsylvania grade crude prices by 15 cents. South Penn set new prices for Southwest Penn Pipe at 1.77, Bureau Pipe at 1.712, Buckeye Pipe at 1.62, while Tidewater lowered Bradford and Allegany district prices to about 2.034.
