Washington June 27 The house sent the 501 million nuisance tax extension bill to conference with the senate to resolve a dispute over extension length. The bills differ on whether the taxes run for one year or two and must be enacted by Saturday night to prevent levies from expiring.
The administration weighs a climactic House battle to retain the Senate's death sentence provision in the Wheeler Rayburn public utility holding company bill. Harrisburg January 27 Many beneficial insurance societies with as much as 10 000 000 in policies outstanding in Pennsylvania face scrutiny under a new bill awaiting the governor's signature. Commissioner Owen J Hunt says the measure would require registration with the state Insurance Department and empower court action to dissolve the charters of societies found to operate without regulation.
The commissioner warned that many societies lack funds to meet claims while others survive scrutiny. The bill would bring beneficial insurance activities under state control, with 20 sponsored by the agency in 1985. Eighteen were approved and await the governor’s signature.
