Lieut Archie Thompson Post 264 VFW with auxiliary will host a 7:30 p.m. citizenship night school program. The class gains permission to use the VFW home for summer sessions. Local civic groups are invited to attend or send representatives for the Americanization rally. Erie County prosecutor J N Wilson will be guest of honor and deliver the evening address. Public invited.
Gov. Geo H. Earle granted respites to two condemned murderers in Pennsylvania. Sherman L. Strawner of Snyder County, convicted of first degree murder in the slaying of Charlan Gable, and Dominick Tacombino Beranton of Lackawanna County, convicted of stabbing a man to death. Strawner’s death date was set for July 8 and Beranton’s for July 1.
Police hunted a blood splattered truck suspected in the death of Eugene Main 62 of Girard RD 1 found in a ditch yesterday morning along Ridge Road near Girard. Coroner Dr. W G Stroble said no truck was located and the fatal injuries came from a fractured skull and lacerations. Main is described as without relatives and Potter’s Field may be involved if no action is taken.
School and city officials study the Howell bill sponsored by Sen. John W. Howell Lackawanna to reenact and amend the tax abatement act. It would allow timely payers by November 1 1933 to receive benefits and permit delinquent payers to gain benefits before current taxes are paid. It also covers properties in tax sales or liens and allows five yearly payments of back taxes with 20 percent each year alongside current taxes.
Constable Lect R Tiffany of this city was released from the county jail Saturday afternoon after paying costs in the Elchynski case totaling 179.19 plus arrest costs. The total sum was set near 180 by the clerk in Sheriff Dell Darting’s office. Tiffany was jailed for failure to pay costs in the Lehnyski case.
A vagrant dropped a check for 34161 in the yard of the Max Falk home in Nore. Postal officials believe the desk tied to a national robbery and suspect the instrument was payable to National Gold Rednors of Chicago. Authorities found the check after the vagrant sought food at a nearby residence.
Harrisburg June 24 Gov George H. Harle today approved the Cleve in making available an appropriation of $10,000 to the joint legislative committee investigating the rere situation in the state. The committee was authorized by joint resolution of the House and Senate during the session. It began its work on Med preliminary report. The committee will continue during the adjournment period. The governor signed a battery of bills and yielded three others.
A branch of the RWD Occupational Reclassification division of the State relief program opened in the city with Van Dive and James Young of the Ere office in charge. The office, a tent in the council chamber of the municipal building, will operate all week for relief and employment eligibility registration and work classification. Jon and Harry Hall oversee the new division, covering Fire and Stanford counties, with EL. Fiedler as the county supervisor.
Tacoma authorities report Mrs Margaret Waley will go on trial on July 6 for kidnapping and conspiracy in the Woyérkaeusey case. Her husband Hasmon M Wiley was sentenced Friday to 45 years in federal prison.
Italy aims to assert sovereignty over Abyssinia amid talks between Benito Mussolini and British envoy Anthony Eden. Reported plans suggest a punitive, arms driven campaign could subdue the last independent African state. Mussolini cites Abyssinia’s league pledges and arms imports to justify action while warning against league enforcement and Britain’s separate dealings with Germany.
After almost a week of rain a late Friday downpour swelled streams and overflowed many creeks, flooding lowlands and alarming residents. Roofs and plumbing were stressed by the heavy showers while farmers expect later damage to crops despite a corn and hay growth surge.
