Debt drain of savings hits banks and stocks lure
The American Bankers Association savings committee reports deposits fell by 195 million in the year to June 1929 as investors flocked to stocks. With hard times, withdrawals in New York banks exceed 20 to 40 million monthly, signaling widespread drain on deposits. The committee warned inflated stock enthusiasm drains savings and predicts deposits may recover only if stock prospects fade. The piece also notes the Nautilus submarine facing early troubles, towings, and delays, and compares its misfortune to the Do-X sea plane’s protracted difficulties.
