Navy Experiment With Research Rocket Fizzles at White Sands
Navy tests at White Sands Proving Ground fail to reach the planned altitude. The Aerobeeshi rocket tops out around 37 miles after an expected 138 miles, with engineers Townsend and others listing possible abandonment or delay while troubleshooting. A prior Aerobeeshi attempt also reached only a few thousand feet, though the vehicle is described as a research tool, not a weapon. Also reported is the death of Foster Stearns, 74, former U.S. representative from New Hampshire.
