May file charges after a city crash on West Smith Street yesterday morning. Richard Saxton, 127 Pili Street, was driving a car that rear ended a vehicle operated by Laake Curtis, 20, near North Center Street. Curtis reportedly stopped for a red light. both drivers could not stop in time. Damage totaled about 100 dollars to Curtis’s car and 175 dollars to Saxton’s vehicle. Investigating officers said Saxton was driving fast for conditions. charges may be filed.
Jean Hersholt whose humanitarian work and acting career touched many will be buried today in Glendale. A Danish native, he spent years in the United States aiding others and died at age 68 in his Boyerted Hills home. The service will honor his charitable legacy and contributions to film and humanitarian causes.
Harrisburg AM report that a 12 million dollar cut to the State Public Assistance Department will tighten funds for the two year period ending May. Officials say the 446 million appropriation will force delays and near abandonment of plans to expand aid. Current allowances cover about 85 percent of the department’s minimum needs with shelter spending increased to close the gap. Assistance rolls declined from 257,000 to 248,000 in the first half of May amid better but still challenging economic conditions.

Beaver Falls residents report a chase as a grocery clerk, Miss Belly Little, 23, was attacked by a large snake near a hedge. May employment in Corry rose with more job openings and fewer unemployed. Pay Hesley of Corry’s Bureau of Employment Security reports 193 new applications, 551 active claimants in April dropping to 417 in May, 105 openings up from 26, with 79 of 142 referred placed. Seventeen veterans and twenty women obtained positions. placements spanned clerical, services, skilled, semi skilled, unaided, and agriculture. Unemployment compensation claims fell from 285 to 108, with weeks claimed dropping from 1,285 to 3,173. Five people were denied for reasons including not unemployed or not available. The office also administered aptitude tests to 25 high school students covering office aptitude, spelling, typing, and shorthand.
Police investigated theft and property damage in a weekend incident in the Rex Theatre area. Usher coats were dumped in a storeroom, one coat missing, a rear exit suspected, and a window broken at a nearby park and in a Journal building. A car window was broken on Spring Street. Damaged basement window noted by early morning crews. Police traced damage to late Saturday night into Sunday morning with a suspect described, but no arrest reported.

CANONSBURG Pa Two killed and about 20 injured in an explosion at the SNPJ Slovenian Club in Strabane late last night. The blast, likely from a hot water heater or furnace, occurred in the basement as stewards Sylvester Chesnie 82 and George Arnold 80 worked to check a noise. The injured include Mrs Duenla Bates and Tod Podboy treated for shock. Arnold remained critical at Canonsburg Hospital today.
