Titusville Area School District aims to keep taxes flat and debt low. The 4.8 million budget, presented by superintendent Howard Newson, shows no real estate tax increase and plans to fund capital needs with cash and state subsidies, avoiding new borrowing.
Taxpayers fund two payrolls for teachers and supplemental staff in the Corry Area School District. Forty teachers will earn 23,861 for 1977 78 with automatic increases to 25,599 next year. Supplemental roles include athletic director 1715 rising to 1835 and assistant editor 200 to 214. Coaches in major sports lead at 1850 for football basketball and wrestling. girls basketball 1126.
New York AP report says Sam Zitron, a six year Public Works engineer, was dismissed for violations of city work rules after holding three jobs and logging excessive hours. He worked 40 hours city plus 12-hour shifts at Peninsula Hospital Center and Hillside General, earning about 60,000 yearly. Investigators cited absenteeism and 52 false time sheets. no crime found. He retired on half pay to avoid litigation, giving up about 12,000 in vacation and retirement pay. Zitron said he worked to meet bills and family needs.
Two area youths were hospitalized in satisfactory condition after bicycle accidents yesterday. Michael McCoy, 12, was struck by a car at an intersection in Columbus around noon. Marilyn Powers, 18, of Corry drove the vehicle. McCoy suffered a fractured leg and abrasions to the palm and ankle. Darryl Weed, 13, of Corry, fell from his bicycle on Route 89 near a construction zone around 5:45 p.m. He sustained a head bump and elbow injuries. police continue probing whether waving to someone contributed to the crash.
Two South Moluccan elders boarded a hijacked train near Assen to negotiate release of about 60 hostages held at two northern Holland sites. Dr Hassan Tan and Mrs Josina Soumakil, both mediators, met with authorities amid uncertainty over report details and plans for talks with the armed group.
In Winchester Tennessee AP report Rev. Claudius Vermilye Jr., 48, was sentenced to 25 to 40 years for unnatural sex acts with boys at Boys Farm Inc. He faces parole eligibility in about 13 years. Bond set at $20,000 as prosecutors described a large homosexual pornography ring.
Robert Mueller, 18, of Schenectady, reportedly stole checks totaling about $10,000 from the Warren Salvation Army, vanished, then was captured by New York state police near the state line. A money pouch and cash were later recovered from a Warren Borough dumpster behind a Penney store after police spoke with the suspect.
Veteran test pilot Howard W. Nelson known as Sam Nelson piloted a Fairchild A 10 during the Paris Air Show at Le Bourget Airport. His jet crashed in the infield in full view of thousands of spectators yesterday.
A Centerville youth attempted to evade Union City police and lost control on old Lincolnville road two miles south of Union City at 2 a.m. The car overturned, injuring 15 year old Debbie Blakeslee who was treated and released at Union City Memorial Hospital. Passenger Debbie Blakeslee 15 and driver Robert Mitchum 17 face pending arrests as $300 damage reported.
About 3000 letters request shares from the estate of Joseph Dorgan a white farmer who left $350000 to the Black community. Recipients include a Des Moines church, a prison inmate seeking seed money for a business and a woman who wants funds to run a karate school. The will contested by Dorgan’s survivor was made public in 1973. A committee will distribute roughly $30000 yearly interest toward education and other needs while the rest is debated.
