Cankerworms May Ease Off in Erie County This Year

In Erie County the infestations of cankerworms might be as heavy as in the past two years though some damage will occur. Extension officials say the worms are just beginning to hatch and feed. A single well timed spray can control them if applied before heavy damage. Cankerworms defoliate forest, shade and fruit trees and may weaken them to other insect attack. Two common species Tall and Spring cankerworms appear at the same time and there is one generation each year.
