Corry unit of Company F 112th Infantry prepares to depart for two weeks of summer camp and training at Tadurntown with Warren's unit. Officers and about 50 enlisted men check weapons, field packs, and rations as they head toward Bedford and Bedford Fay Grounds for bivouac before joint training houses. AWOL warrant for Neil A Ross adds tension to the sendoff.
Police say burglars broke into the home of a Pipeline executive between Monday and Tuesday, stealing a safe with stocks bonds and jewelry. A carton with most items later appeared in the yard, suggesting the thieves abandoned the loot after being pursued. Lt Edward F Bouse reported the mystery recovery and the time frame.
West Covina authorities say Dr Raymond Bernard Finch will face the death penalty for the murder of his wife Barbara Jean. A four day preliminary hearing ended with Finch bound over for trial in Superior Court. Co defendant Carole Pappa will have a separate preliminary hearing and may be consolidated.
Erie County faces a possible funds surplus of about 50 000 in the fuels tax account with an estimated 80 000 year end total, variable to five months of highway damages. City port commission wants fuel tax money for Digueshe Pier area road work, a long running dispute with Corry and Brie over allocations. County Controller notes 214 000 expected from the state in December will ease budget pressure.
William Lacey of Meadville died suddenly this afternoon at the Railway Express office on Center Street Mt. 190. He had been ill earlier and had been working on Erie Railroad train No. 7 from Andover Ohio. Arriving in Corry, he collapsed at the rear of the train and died from a heart attack. Lacey was a former Corry resident.
West Germany seeks to stiffen U S opposition to any major concession at the Big Four talks on West Berlin. Foreign Minister von Brentano and Secretary Rusk discuss firm resistance to halting the hold on Berlin until German reunification.
HARRISBURG AP Striking steelworkers gained Gov. Lawrence pledge to help obtain food surpluses from county officials. Nine Pennsylvania district United Steelworkers leaders met with Lawrence for two hours to report distribution problems. Lawrence planned to involve county commissioners for better cooperation and would seek action on butter and cheese for idle workers. He also asked U S Agriculture Secretary Ezra Benson to provide butter and cheese, noting no action yet. Emery Bacon led the union delegation with William L. Batt Jr and other officials present.
A Corry man and a second motorist escaped serious injuries in a head-on collision on a rural Concord Ridge road west of Spartansburg Barry. James L Haslett, 47, of 915 Delaware Street, sustained chest confusion and a concussion and was treated at Corry Memorial Hospital. His car sustained about 300 dollars in damage while the other vehicle, driven by Mahion Schweitzer Jr., 23, of RD 4 Corry, suffered roughly 500 dollars in damage. Police said investigation is ongoing and possible charges against Haslett are pending.
In Terre Haute Indiana twelve jurors convict eight men of conspiracy tax evasion and failure to register as a gambling syndicate. They face up to 21 years and 50 000 dollars per man with sentencing set for September 10 by US District Judge Caleb Holder. Defendants include Leo Shaffer Jules Horwick Philip Shore Irving Gordon Tamner Joseph Jacobs Charles Sumner and Edgar Wyatt. Bonds were set at 10 000 each with prosecutors seeking higher bonds for four defendants due to past criminal records.
Seven persons were injured in a head on crash on Route 97 north of Waterford near Lawrence Park. Five Union City residents were taken to Union City Stem Memorial Hospital. Names include Mrs Carl Blakestee 69 with multiple injuries and Mrs John Lucas and Beverly Toner 12 with leg injuries. Others treated include Heide Toner 9 Margaret Toner 11 and Mr John Dailey 40 Eric and Mr John Dailey 69 with various injuries. conditions reported as fair or satisfactory. Police investigation referenced.
A Commun World Youth Festival in Austria tightens controls to stop defections of delegates from Hungary Czechoslovakia and East Germany. East bloc officials warn that calls for democracy freedom and rock n roll spark trouble while festival organizers seek to keep peace and friendship. Delegates seek asylum from the Communist states amidst tightened political discussions and reduced social events.
Vice President Richard Nixon urged Soviet and American scientists to focus on peaceful atomic projects. After touring a Siberian forest site of a planned Soviet power plant he met about 3000 workers and said the atom offers hope for joint progress rather than weapons. He was joined by Admiral Hyman Rickover who invited Soviet engineers to view American installations. The plant appeared smaller than expected and workmen cheered his message.
A Chicago and North Western passenger train derailed on a hillside near Menomonie Wisconsin injuring 107 people. Forty seven were hospitalized and 60 more suffered lesser injuries as seven cars left the rails and rolled about 20 feet down a slope above U S Highway 12.
The United Steelworkers president David J McDonald said the union would welcome increased federal involvement to settle the nationwide steel industry strike. He noted the sector's complexity and urged direct government participation as mediation and tactful talks continue amid ongoing plant wage and working condition disputes. Federal mediators and Secretary of Labor remained active as talks persisted.
In Karakoram range the British mountaineering party, aiming for Batura Muztagh Peak in the Himalayas, is feared swept away by a blizzard. The team started their ascent despite harsh weather.
A stretch of Lakeview Drive near Canadohta Lake sank into a lagoon after weeks of subsidence. Bloomfield Township workers attempted gravel reinforcement but the entire section collapsed, taking six trees with it and erasing the road.
Corry area resident Janes Sheldon will be honored Saturday evening with the High Pilgrim Degree, a rare Moose lodge accolade awarded annually to about 100 members. The ceremony at Moosehaven includes Pilgrim governors and the supreme governor, with Robes presented by three dozen patriots from Erie, Bradford, Albion, Mercer, Greenville, and Warren.
A federal judge in Dallas declined to order immediate school integration this fall. He urged the Dallas school board to prepare for integration, warning that the 147 school district could lose over 24 million dollars yearly in state aid amid conflicts between state and federal law. The hearing followed a NAACP petition seeking rapid integration, with district enrollment about 122,000 including roughly 22,000 Black students.
The July labor market survey by the Department of Employment Security shows broad declines in unemployment in leading centers with many areas having low to moderate rates. Philadelphia and Pittsburgh still faced substantial unemployment as a steel strike loomed. A bipartisan group of Pennsylvania lawmakers urged support for relief legislation, speaking at a press conference.
