Cleveland shipping firms control about 40 percent of Great Lakes traffic as iron ore stockpiles grow. The Lakes fleet opened late due to reduced steel mill activity, bringing down roughly 29 million tons so far this season, with projections showing possible total demand near 65 million tons if trends continue. Steel mills operate at about 65 percent capacity. 72 of the nation’s iron ore ships are idle compared with 15 idle last year.
