James Mead Sr., 78, of 16 Wayne Street, Corry, was killed when his gasoline truck left the road and crashed into Patrick Run. Fire erupted, engulfing the vehicle with 700 plus gallons of gasoline and kerosene. Mead was trapped in the cab and later body removal required a gaff hook. Police cited accidental death. traffic span damaged, road reopened after firefighters battled flames.
The Corry Board of Education accepted Attorney Roger Brown’s resignation and elected Frank G. Monight as solicitor. President Vaughn to decide salary terms with McKnight as joint school panel to oversee the Corry Area Joint School. A Thursday 8:30 p.m. meeting of the joint committee was set to supervise the jointure program. Superintendent Douxtas was authorized to attend a conference at State College. A clocked birthday cutoff of six by February to enter classes was approved, continuing on Page Eight.
Washington dispatch reports the Army alerting two National Guard divisions for movement to Europe this fall. The 28th from Pennsylvania and the 48th from Rhode Island, Connecticut, and Vermont join regulars the 4th Infantry and 2nd Armored Division already en route this year. Final 2nd Armored units due this month. 28th trained at Camp Atterbury Indiana. 48th at Camp Pickett Virginia. About six percent of Corry and Union City men will join the 28th for transatlantic service. Movements likely after maneuvers in North Carolina next month.
Angeles July 1 Mickey Cohen faces five years in prison and a $10,000 fine for income tax evasion with total liabilities nearing 250000 including penalties and interest for 1946 1947 and 1948. His lawyers said he will appeal and filing of formal notice is likely today. The Brooklyn born LA underworld figure stood steady as Judge Mon Harrison sentenced him.
School Nurse Eva Kepler releases a report covering Cory public schools testing half the students. Of 785 examined, 574 had some medical or surgical needs or communicable disease. 620 including 149 extractions and 281 fillings. Harrisburg July 10 The Senate judiciary committee voted 4 0 to kill a civil rights bill aimed at ending employment discrimination based on race color or creed. The measure would have created a three member commission to enforce the ban on job or union membership discrimination. Governor Fine had urged Senate action the day before.
