Eastern Pennsylvania endured a dry day while western sections faced thunderstorms and damage. In Meadville and Kane injuries occurred from storms and a falling tree struck a car. In Washington Kozlov and Nixon clashed in a surprise debate, with Nixon scoring a point on the gold-for-food remark.
Corry alderman Melvin S Cobbett was elected president of the Pennsylvania Magistrates Association at the convention in Erie Delegates also chose Hershey for next year’s annual meeting and named several officers and directors across the state government group.
Barbara Ann Wentz, 16, was abducted near Springdale while returning from a grocery store and found in a car with Vernon Estep, a 36 year old Rogers truck driver. She had bruises on her neck but was unharmed and returned to her parents. A nine hour search by nearly 1,000 police and volunteers covered about 15 miles east of Springdale. Estep was jailed on an open charge after questioning. he claimed no clear motive.
Madrid AP reports a British freighter rescued one of four US Air Force bomber crew members after a crash near the Azores. Capt. Stephen Carter of East Hartford Conn. was found in good condition and moved to a U.S. Navy ship bound for Lajes Air Force Base. Three other crewmen remained missing as an intensive search continued.
Corry area escaped the worst of a severe storm that swept northwest in Pennsylvania yesterday afternoon. A large equipment shed in Conneaut Township near Albion was struck, causing about 15000 in damages. Four livestock perished in two burns. A 93 to 61 degree drop in temperature noted. One injury reported near Meadville as Asa Dennis, 24, was unconscious after pulling a plug during a lightning strike at Meadville City Hospital. Power shortages appeared near Meadville and Titusville. Carnival damage at Dempseytown estimated at 1000.
Governor Earl K Long, age 63, may have a slightly failing heart amid a fourth term campaign. Dr Victor Lief and three colleagues said there is no coronary attack, but concern over his condition after a heart failure noted Wednesday. Long and staff remained at his motel headquarters through the night. He previously suffered a heart attack in 1950.
The Erie Railroad and Delaware Lackawanna and Western propose a merger creating a 7500 mile system from Hoboken to Chicago. The plan expects earnings gains around 1.4 million yearly before taxes and calls for stockholder approvals and two thirds votes. Erie and Lackawanna stockholders meet September 22 to decide.
Three Crawford County residents died and three others were injured when a high speed crash occurred near the intersection of Routes 8 and 102, three miles west of Meadville. Victims include Steve Winthecke, 42, of Meadville. Testy Darrow, 19. and Frederick Hurgigan, 13. Three others, including Thomas Shall, 18, and Thomas McKiernan, 15, were treated at Spencer Hospital. Darrow’s car veered off the road after skidding on oily pavement, colliding with Wintecke’s approaching vehicle. The crash caused extensive damage and prompted an investigation by local police.
The Senate wrestled with indirect versus direct funding for foreign development loans. Supporters led by Eisenhower opponents fought to uphold Treasury borrowing against a Case point of order on legislative appropriations. If sustained, the ruling could alter a five year five billion dollar loan program backed by the Foreign Relations Committee.
A 20 year old Bear Like mon o was killed when his truck collided head on with a car near Jamestown in Chautauqua County. Coroner Samier Bowes and deputy Jerome Baily reported the fatality occurred after the eastbound vehicle drove over a snit and struck workers. John Bard, 21, county worker, was struck by flying debris and died shortly after at WCA Hospital. Funeral arrangements are being planned.
Corryite Arthur Lo Swarm of 126 Park Street entered a plea of guilty to indecent liberties in Rye County criminal court. He was arrested May 2 on a complaint by the parents of a one year old boy. Judge Evans ordered the case continued to September and Swarm was released on bond. Police Chief Harvey Drak said Swarm planned to seek a psychiatric evaluation today.
A severe weather event caused a lightning strike at a senate building in Lae Dewitt Conley area. Fire crews secured the scene as damage was reported to the roof and interior. No serious injuries were mentioned, and officials began an assessment of the grain storage nearby.
The Carry Memorial Hospital today received a microfilm camera donated by Citizens National Bank. Bank executives explained the device will enable duplicating all bank records at another location for national emergencies. The hospital will use the unit to film patient records locally and send film to Eastman Kodak in Rochester for processing, saving about $150 yearly.
An All Continental Can Co jet disintegrated in a wheat field near Marion Ohio killing ten people including eight top executives. Only portions of three bodies were recovered with the wreckage spanning about 150 yards. The plane, a Swin waelie B2, vanished during a late Wednesday descent amid a clearing thunderstorm. The crash occurred on HF Smith's farm six miles east of Marion as the craft approached from the north. rescue crews reported debris and possible engine remnants buried in the field.
Clymer G Camper died in the Azores after a sudden illness while awaiting a court determination of his situation. The 12 year Air Force veteran, who served in the Far East, resided in Clymer and had moved to Clinton where he resigned from air service. He attended Gannon College and belonged to the Clymer Methodist Church. He was employed as a machinist at Ajax Iron Works. Survived by wife Jacqueline, two daughters May and Bus, two brothers George and Dotakl, father Lester, and grandmother Mrs Beda Popney. Funeral arrangements are pending.
Brandner formerly of Putis birred pleaded guilty to first degree murder yesterday in the brutal stabbing of his wife. Mrs Brandner formerly of Fredericktown Pa died Friday from multiple stab wounds. He is a member of the crew of the submarine agent based at Key West.
