House Republican leader Rep. Albert W. Johnson voiced hope that bipartisan tax talks starting next week could yield an early compromise and adjournment by Aug. 15. The House passed 77 million dollars in new taxes on personal property, bank shares and gas utilities, with Senate action looming amid Republican opposition to some measures. The plan includes a six mill statewide personal property tax, extending the public utilities gross receipts tax to gas companies, and doubling the bank shares tax. one Democrat defected on two measures. A collision between a tractor trailer and a sand truck on Route 29 near Bowmanstown killed driver Moyers Williams Moyers, 34, of Scranton. Two others were injured: George Hokhart, 40, of Bowmanstown, and Edward Uffalussy Scranton, with Eckhart the most seriously hurt.

Harry J Hirth, 22, of Huntingdon was found dead along Route 26 about four miles north of a Bedford County community. Police report he died from a crushed skull and multiple injuries in a suspected hit and run incident and are continuing investigations.

In Covington Louisiana Gov Earl Long, dogged by divorce tax and health problems, pressed for re election amid a mayoral style bustle. He ordered oxygen in his room and drove five miles to an all night restaurant after midnight as aides and politicians swarmed in and out of his motel.
A 7 year old boy crawled into a coin operated clothes dryer at a laundromat and was found mangled about an hour and a half later by two customers. The machine reportedly started after closing and opening the door, with juveniles using the dryer free. President Eisenhower and Mrs. Eisenhower marked their 43rd wedding anniversary with a White House reception for staff.

Corry area Lions Club hosted a farewell dinner for 18 foreign exchange students including Volker Gempt at Corry Area High School cafeteria. The students gave one minute talks on America before boarding a 24 day tour eastward. American families hosting next year’s student were among attendees.
AP reports President Eisenhower cautioned Soviet Deputy Premier Frol Kozlov against misreading the West’s resolve on West Berlin. Kozlov, arriving for talks with Eisenhower and Secretary of State Herter, urged friendly coexistence as a path to peace, while the U S likely pressed hard on Berlin demands with no concessions expected before the Geneva talks resume July 13.
The US Air Force defended Captain John G. Schmitt Jr. stating the pilot could not have controlled the crippled F-105 jet before it crashed into Ishikawa's Dyntac primary school in Okinawa. The disaster killed 16 people and injured 112, with 1900 temporarily homeless, as the burning wreckage and falling debris struck a ten block residential area.
Burt Man, elderly blind wife Mrs Biddy, in Makuse ta area, faced a savage fox attack while in their Newport home. He battled the animal with a knife and a cane, ultimately killing it after wounding both the fox and himself. Mrs Biddy was treated for injuries, health officials inspected the scene, and the head of the animal was sent for tests.
Washington reports reveal the Air Force spent about 9000 to build a 21 foot overhanging roof at the Colorado Springs academy dining hall to block sun. House hearings show 2000 drapes and 2500 more needed to finish the area, contradicting earlier claims that no drapes were required.
A federal judge issued an arrest warrant after former Teamater boss Dave Heck failed to appear for pleading to charges that he accepted $200,000 from two truck firm executives while serving as union chief. The case involves alleged bribery and union leadership misconduct.
