He said about $8 million in stock is frozen and contracts with major distillers totaling $41 million were kept secret. Washington January 30 The bill extending the REA for two years was sent back to the Senate for concurrence on amendments adopted by the House in passing the measure yesterday. The House passed the bill, like the Senate version, without a record vote and prompt Senate concurrence was expected. House amendments included provisions for time banking and currency commissions, loans up to twenty thousand dollars for developers of small lending properties, and financing for electrical, plumbing, or air conditioning equipment.

He expects two to three weeks for investigation. four confirmations occurred yesterday while five major nominations await action by Senate committee on executive nominations chaired by Senator James J. Coyne. Names include Norbert J. Fitzgerald Levi G. Lichliter Colley S. Baker and L. Howell Davis. withheld confirmations cover Richard J. Beamish Seymour Heilbron Charles T. Carpenter Paul O. Sunday and A G Q Marburger. Milk control board sits with no current members as several resigned. other boards may operate with reduced membership.
Pittsburgh Jan 30 The first weekend drive to obtain Public Works Administration funds for flood control reservoirs in the head waters of the Allegheny and Monongahela rivers began today A campaign aims to secure 50000 signatures on a petition urging Allegheny County's representatives to press Congress for allocation of the funds to build 18 reservoirs.
Harrisburg June 30 The house committee on mines and mining plans a thorough investigation of the work of 44 state coal mine inspectors. Rep Jet J Downey announced that a resolution is drafted for presentation when the house reconvenes, calling for a perusal of the mine inspection system.
Bruno Richard Hauptmann stood on the witness stand denying participation in the Lindbergh kidnapping and murder as his wife Alna Schoeftler Hauptmann testified to his alibi. Over four days he faced aggressive cross examination, maintaining he never knew the ransom money was in his possession and insisting Isidor Fisch left it in a shoe box.
A brutal cold snap kept readings near six degrees below zero overnight as winds eased. Forecasters said temperatures would edge upward through Thursday with cloudy skies, followed by a gradual warmup into Friday as the frigid front gradually backs off.

Injured were James McLaughlin 35, part owner of a Reynoldsville beer garden, and Herbert Fales 21. McLaughlin suffered hand, face and head injuries. Fales had a dislocated shoulder.
A spectacular eight story brick building formerly used as a shoe factory burned near Central Square in Lynn Massachusetts. Forty persons, including several firemen, were injured as flames raged for nearly five hours in sub zero weather. Estimated losses reached 300000 with about 50 people made jobless. Firemen from eight towns fought the blaze and protected the Central National Bank building as embers swept the business district. The site housed the Franco Manufacturing Company and Broadway Wood Heater Co. In a separate item, trustees of the Pennsylvania College for Women named Dr Herbert L Spencer as new president, with duties beginning in June.
Harrisburg January 31 The State Chamber of Commerce opened its annual convention today to chart the legislative course for Pennsylvania amid unprecedented taxation. Nine committees will report during the two day session with Weeks of Scranton unveiling tax and spending recommendations. The convention also heard from constitutional committee head Henderson on state constitution revision and concluded with an annual dinner featuring Edgar Barnes on state finances.
In Pottsville Pennsylvania on January 30 the defense rested for Joseph Bruno, charged with murder in the Relayres electric-eve massacre. The proceedings concluded at 11:58 a.m. as the defense finished its case.

A overheated furnace in a Sharon beer garden caused a fire in downtown storage building and adjoining tavern. Damages were estimated at $16,000. The blaze started in the oyster grill operated by Nick Plesa and spread to the storage structure housing L. Fische Paint and Wallpaper and Limber Yard office, with timber in the yard burned as well.
