A six member House committee led by Adolph Sabath disclosed widespread fraud and dishonesty by real estate bondholders protective committees. The inquiry traced schemes across Philadelphia New York Chicago Detroit Milwaukee with plans for coast to coast follow ups. Senate Majority Leader Robinson predicts ratification before night.
In Harrisburg January 2, Gov George H Earle seeks to rewrite the 61 year old state constitution by January 1, 19. It passed the Democratic house sent to the Republican senate on a party line vote of 1149 to 78. Republican minority opposed the bill as poorly drawn and criticized the administration's approach.
Harrisburg reports a bill to hold water utilities liable for property damage or loss of life when fire protection is discontinued. The measure targets cities and boroughs including Everton, Fayette County, after hydrants were destroyed when service was shut off over unpaid bills. In related news, Franklin, Pa. reports the death of Mrs. B R Fergus, 64, wife of a state railroad official. She died of acute liver failure after a period misidentified as a cold.
Washington reports that twenty two cents of every federal dollar goes to interest on the national debt, up from two cents before the war. Treasury figures show a 10 day federal income of 2,711,650,688 with estimated interest charges at 895,000,000 on a debt of 28.8 billion. The rising cost of running the government pushes total interest into the 24,742,702 range of the year’s 1,124,824,705 expenditure.
Blatt Brothers, operators of the Rex theatre in this city, will assume management of the Library theatre in Mercer Pa on February 1 after completing lease negotiations. Gilbert Cool becomes Mercer theatre manager, with Dan Caldwell succeeding Cool at the Rex. The Blatt chain now runs eight theatres in six western Pennsylvania cities.
A naval air unit rescued a starving family in a snowbound farmhouse in Larehurst New Jersey. Pilot W F Wiley and Chief Petty Officer G M Pickering flew six miles through drifts to drop food by parachute to Bingham Myers his wife and five children marooned since last week. The supply reached the porch and the family brought it inside.
Chicago January 28 Wiley Post the record making flier will attempt a seven hour stratosphere hop next week from Los Angeles to New York aboard the Winnie Mae. He aims to fly at 30000 feet with an average speed surpassing 379 mph carrying limited mail on the regular Transcontinental Western Airlines route.
Harrisburg January 20 Government announces the retention of Dr Glyde L King professor at University of Pennsylvania to act in an advisory capacity on matters affecting the state budget and related taxation problems.
Democratic program of labor reforms outlined by Gov Warle aims to raise minor employable age, cap work hours for women, establish wage boards, and regulate industrial homework. Lawmakers from Beaver, Philadelphia, Allegheny, and other counties back proposals including penalties for wage nonpayment and annual registration of industrial establishments. A national recovery plan and public works support are pledged by the administration.
In Harrisburg on January 29 four of Governor George H Earl s major appointments were confirmed by the Republican Senate. Confirmed were Colley S Baker of Stroudsburg and Levi G Lichliter of Jennerstown as members of the Securities Commission Norbert J Fitzgerald of Erie as member of the Workmen s Compensation Board and L Howard Davis of Philadelphia as chairman of the Board of Movie Cams.
Judge Robert Gawthrop of the liquor control board told Governor Harle that Thomas Logue and Charles A. Ware were the two elected state officials suspected of trying to influence liquor contract awards. Logue, chosen secretary of internal affairs on the Democratic ticket, will take office in May. Waters, a Republican, is state treasurer with two years left on his term.
In Baton Rouge on January 29 1935 United Press reports Sen Huey P Long furious after National Guard martial law failed to break the Square Deal Association accuses them of espionage and terrorism to crush opposition. Association leaders deny direct acts while fearing secret arrests as martial law remains in East Baton Rouge Parish with over 1000 troops ready to act on orders from Long via Allen. Secret nightly meetings are held in neighboring parishes as private and public assemblies are prohibited.
President Judge Richard A. Kennedy of the Allegheny County Court died at Mercy Hospital in Pittsburgh shortly before noon. He was admitted January 21 after a needed operation and did not survive.
Stockholders of the Cony Building and Loan Association received an encouraging annual report showing a stronger financial position for 1934 and a brighter outlook for 1935. Four directors were named with three-year terms for Wales and Haskins, Foster to the board, and Bentley filling Fogle's unexpired one-year term. A postponed board reorganization is set for February 4.
In Washington the administration pressed to ratify a court proposal amid bitter Senate debate. The effort centered on securing two thirds of the 94 voting members, with 60 votes needed for ratification after absentees reduced the tally. Telegram campaigns from Roosevelt allies added pressure but largely failed to sway key lawmakers.
