Blizzard conditions swept Corry with winds and near whiteout. power crews began midnight plowing to clear snow before more strikes. Walter Ross, Corry Streets Superintendent, warned school decisions depend on conditions as officials report no accidents in the county over the weekend.
John Patterson, sworn in as Alabama governor, says continued pressure for integration could lead to closing public schools. He vows to keep schools segregated and urges Negroes to oppose agitators, warning of possible permanent school closures and suffering for children. Patterson also bars Negro bands from inaugural ceremonies and proposes laws to cut funds to integrated schools.
Fidel Castro announced plans to invite newsmen from the United States and Latin America to a Havana rally backing the execution of Batista loyalists. He said five planes would ferry reporters from Miami and another plane could go to Washington to tell the world the Cuban case.
A group of 16 teen girls from St Patrick's Catholic Youth Organization at Lawrence Massachusetts slid down an ice glazed Cranmore Mountain hill. A number were injured with one serious pelvic and spinal injuries. Five were kept for observation and ten released after treatment. The trail had been closed for hazards and the incident occurred during a winter sports party.
Six people were reported killed or injured in an explosion and fire at a home in Clear Lake Shores, a resort community 35 miles northeast of Galveston, Texas. Local authorities investigated the blast and the cause was not immediately known.
