Egypt opposes British appeal to four nations

Egypt warned on January 16 that if the United States France the Netherlands or Norway send warships into Egyptian territorial waters to keep Suez Canal traffic open it would be an act of aggression. Britain had asked these nations to join in guarding the canal and Egyptian spokesman Dr Mahmoud Azmy Hey said sending ships would violate the 1888 Suez Canal Convention and could lead to a UN appeal. He added that sending technical aid pilots or dockers would be an unfriendly act. Two killed in crash on Pennsylvania Turnpike.
