Johnson Bucks Dem Liberals In Party Tiff
Washington AP Lyndon B Johnson the Senate Democratic Leader resisted liberal calls for a bigger voice in policy matters. He opposed expanding the nine member Policy Committee while signaling a caucus on policy issues and school construction. Gore Douglas urged a larger panel and a party loyalty standard. Johnson’s camp argued changes would fail without a 65 vote majority. Gore defended principled party responsibility and emphasized bills for White House review. Smathers questioned why Gore spoke publicly rather than in closed party talks.
